Thanks for posting this. It is better information that what we can calculate on the OFA site as it states the total number of progeny produced vs total evaluated. I think most dogs in the US do not produce nearly as many puppies either.  Is there any chance that xrays that would not pass are not submitted to the SV for their evaluation or is there a requirement that says all xrays must go to the SV regardless of whether or not they look normal? Unless I'm reading this wrong, so far less than 28% of Pakros' progeny have had hip xrays and less that 23% elbow xrays  (or the bad xrays were not submitted). Is that about the average percentage of progeny evaluation one would expect to see in Germany?

I have a question regarding the table above.  It is NOT to bash Pakros.  I love this animal and have been trying to get a breeding with him for 2 years, without success.  I have seen his progeny and think the world of them. The question I have does not relate to Pakros specifically, at all.

What about all the dogs in this progeny group that have NEVER been x-rayed, OR the dogs that did not show promising results and the x-rays just thrown in the trash and never submitted for review, and not included in the population above?  How valid or invalid does that render the table?  How useful is the table above and to what end are the conclusions benificial?  Statistical data can be tailor-made to achieve almost any desired result, unless a much larger percentage of the population being studied is used in the process.

I hope these questions can be addressed without offending anyone. Thanks in advance.

Blitzen,

It is generally accepted that most failing x-rays are never sent in. The actual number is open for speculation. Since vets must be registered with SV to take orthopaedic x-rays some corruption may be reduced. Obviously most pet owners do not have their dog screened unless a debilitating condition develops. Best Wishes, Jonah

Thanks, Jonah, excluding xrays that won't pass and consideringthe OFA and the SV are both known to make errors in judgement when evaluating xrays, it looks like these 2 systems are equal in most ways. OFA does not have a ZW type of rating, but any breed club could enstate that if they wanted to place an assigned risk number on breeding dogs. The ZW number may or may not be the true predication of that dog's production record considering not all progeny have been xrayed and some bad xrays are never submitted. I guess in the long run, it's better than nothing.

Some of his progeny are still too y9ung to be xrayed, so you should delete that number (mentally) for the total.
