7 month old schutzhund prospect. Great temperment, over the top drives. He knows sit, stay very well. I have him sit and stay when I throw his ball. We were not training per se, just playing to burn off some energy. As I bring the ball up and back to throw he jumps up and gets me good on my upper underarm. For you schutzhund folk, what would be the consequence for your dog? Immediately put him away and pay no attention for a bit or get "stern" with him when this happens. I am a positive trainer, which works very well for us, but I think there are times when a dog needs to be put in his place, like this time, however I don't want to ruin his drive either.

My 12 month old does the same thing when I'm throwing the ball, her tug, etc. She is just so "into the game" and can't wait. I usually watch her pretty closely but, ever so often, she'll tag me but, she realizes when she does and it's generally just a quick grab and release. I have to be very insistent that she sits as soon as I'm getting ready to throw. She keeps her eyes glued on the object and "wants it" so bad, she gets antsy. However, 9 times out of 10, she'll sit until I throw. If she doesn't, we stop the game immediately.

be faster
i use my knee,,, if pup is trying to jump and get toy, they bump into my knee. they are in a sense correcting themselves. most learn pretty quick that jumping up does not make the toy come to life so they can getit. also this is not a correction from me since i did not give a leash correction or use my voice.

If you saw all the bruises on my arms and torso, you would think I was a victim of domestic violence.....I am just a victim of a 8 month old dog who is a whole hell of a lot faster than I am when he wants the ball. If I am not playing two ball and just using one, I get mauled. I have much more control over the dog when he knows there are two....plus it allows for me to BUILD his ability to hold the sit or down longer. The minute he breaks the sit or down, I run in yelling NO NO NO! and then make sure I back up the training a bit. I went too far or I held him in sit or down too long, and he wasn't ready to increase the duration of the command. I want ball play, even though a learning tool, to be the best kind of fun. I can't use the ball or tug when teaching obedience with him, as he is too driven for it. The ball is all about the reward for being a good learner, listener and for focus AFTER we train. So, I guess there really isn't a consequence to his behavior other than with holding the ball until he is in correct position.
