Advice please,

My vet checked out the pups at 6 1/2 weeks with a very thorough exam and then again at 10 weeks.  Two males had both testicles in place and two males did not.  She was pretty sure she could feel them and when I voiced concern she said to not even start worrying about it until 16 weeks of age.

How often do male pups only have 1 testicle and is it life threatening? and, shouldn't I keep the male pups til they drop?

Males testicles can drop as late or later than 8 months. It depends when the inguinal ring closes and where they are positioned at the time it closes. If you want to sell them, be up front with the buyer(s), they may be going to neutor anyway. Its not life threatening but the dog should be neutored or the retained testicle taken out at least. It was said it can become cancerous, but I believe newer studies may have disproved this finding. Maybe someone else can chime in if they have heard this.

Thank you for responding Trailrider.  I would give them limited registration and always ask the buyer questions regarding their intent with the dog.  I want to know that I have done my best to suit the dog with the family and don't bend much when they think that the one that is the "cutest" happens to be the one with really high drive and energy but they have small children, etc.  I don't like to think of my pups being at odds with their new owner's just because they didn't suit the temperment they were looking for.

How much should I expect to bend on pricing, etc given the fact that they would neutor anyway.  Maybe the cost of eventual neutoring?  Am I doing right by giving limited registration (it could be changed later if the darn thing drops .

Welcome to the board :)

Thank you Shandra, I think...  I've looked forward to having something to ask that I haven't found in the past threads to read up on.  Been searching past threads all day and haven't seen this discussed.   I have also thought that they would be good candidates for service work which I would like to get into with some pups anyway.

I paid "pet price" for Dante who had one testicle that never descended.

Found Chaos's at about 3 and a half months if I remember right.

Thanks for the responses - they are truly appreciated.

Is there a known percentage of pups that don't ever get both?  Like I could expect this to happen for every 1 out of 4 male pups, etc?

Also, I would like to look into the DNA profiling for Thor & Chloe and would like opinions/advice on the advantages to doing so.  I believe that this is the real way to go in getting the best success rate (eventually as the science develops) in breeding out genetic weaknesses.

Has anyone sent in blood samples for the bloat/torsion study?  I tried to email Dr. Fletcher but it came back undeliverable - his Scriptts lab address is local to us and thought we could drop off samples personally.
