I am getting a GSD in the next 6 months or so and had heard about Woodside.  They have a location in British Columbia and in Arizona.  Has anyone heard of them , aware of their reputation or met any dogs that they have bred?  I've grown up with GSD, but never adopted one.  Can someone provide a checklist of questions that I should have answered prior to making the decision of which breeder to go with?

Thank you, Angus

I don't know anything about this kennel, but here is a link to Questions To Ask A Breeder, copy and paste it: http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=302

Visit their website at http://www.woodsideshepherds.com/ and decide for yourself based on what your plans and needs are for your puppy.

They breed primarily for the American specialty show ring--not dogs conforming to the international breed standard. I have heard of many of their AKC dogs who went all the way to the top at GSDCA National Specialty Shows.

To the best of my knowledge, they are honorable breeders who would try to provide you with a healthy, sound, well-cared-for, and socialized  pup--not exactly dogs for competing in the German-style show ring, breed surveys, or schutzhund training/titling. Their pups could probably be trained for AKC obedience/agility/tracking, herding, therapy dogs, or assistance dogs.

Ask them if the parents have OFA certified hips/elbows, if their bloodlines are generally free from bloat/toxic gut syndrome/EPI, degenerative myelopathy, hypothyroidism, allergies, skin disorders, what sort of written guarantee do they offer for health/hips/elbows, etc.

Thank you very much for your help Louise and GoldenElk.

The other breeder I was considering was Covy-Tucker Hill in Cotati, but according to a lot of people on this site, they do not come highly recommended.

@ Louise

....and what is your feedback on Covy - Tucker Hill?

Covy-Tucker Hill is run by Cappy Pottle and Gloria Birch. It has been around for many decades. They are a reputable, very well known kennel. In the 60's, they were the breeders of Manhattan, the only GSD to win BIS at Westminister. Both Pottle and Birch have served on the Board of Directores of the GSDCA. HOWVEVER,  they breed for the really extreme show dog type: extreme angulation, dogs that are slender and lacking in substance, sometimes with almost collie-like heads. See their web pages for some examples.

It's always a red flag to me when a dog can be stacked so its hock is flat on the ground!

If you are looking in British Columbia CA. I would recommend Tracy Bullinger.  http://www.bullingershepherds.com  She is just up the road from Woodside. Much better dogs in my opinion!
