I was just wondering how does giving shepherds vitamin c help prevent HD. I know vitamin c fights off infections and is an anitoxident but what exactly does it do for HD?

There is a difference between Vitamin C and Ester C but there are many studies showing that Ester-C is extremely beneficial for the dogs in many ways not only HD   Here is a link to an article, in relation to Ester C and HD http://www.workingdogs.com/doc0039.htm   You can also goggle this topic and come up with much more info.

I wonder why on Ester C , it has a warning as to give to pregnant bitches , consult your vet...??????? or not approved to use on pregnant bitches..on some bottle,,,,all meaning the same,,,,????

Any one know?

It doesnt prevent it,,,it helps give the system the ability to absorb calcium and with vit d and magnesium , helps build good cartlage....

I had a severly dsplasic lab.  Vet suggested I try high volumn Vit..C, since I couldn't afford a double hip replacement.  It was almost a miracle.  From having to be carried up and down stairs at 7 months, he went on to live an active, and relatively pain free life to the age of 11.

I now have another severly dsplastic GSD.  I tried the same Vit. C regimen.  Nothing, not a bit of relief.   It's rimadyl and adequin injections, and even they don't keep him as pain free as I'd like.  But he also is very active, and not doing too badly.

Perhaps the Vit C reacts differently from dog to dog.  I can't acount for why one dog did so well,  and the other not be helped at all.

I wasn't aware at the time of the lab of Ester C.  So just used chewable people tablets.  1000 millgrams a day.

The first part of understanding what kind of Vitamin C is being discussed to help with the stabalization of collagen, which glues our and dogs bodies together....It is not ascorbic acid.....that is what commercial dog foods add to dog food........it is a chemical......the body does=not employ this vitamin c,,,,,,80% of abscorbic acid is flushed tru the kidneys in 2 hours after digesting..

The body has to have natural vitamin c which cannot be found in the drug store or the store ,in a bottle over the counter...you have to find a mail order co. or a pet vendor that produces it.....Ester C is a good way of getting some Vit C....as it has to be from a vegatable source......raw vegatables, raw milk or raw meat.....these are the sources.......the free radicals that get into the dogs body from many sources ,,pesticides, antibiotics   which btw   destroy any Vit c in the body, during the taking of these antibiotics.....

Free radicals are gotten out of the dogs body by adding vit E also , in good form , like capsule form , fresh not rancid...and give Vit c every day from pup to adult....now   the best way to get Vit c in to your dog,   is     raw meat,,,chicken necks, cooked potatoes, slivered raw carrots,  and pups can be given   raw milk   (goat) is where we can get that.....not evaporated, or homoginized, or pasturized....

Many research vets are breeders of large breed dogs, and have done this study on their own kennels ,and have proved that it works in preventing HD,,,also realizing that some lines are predisposed to HD.....but have managed to ward it off, ...

SOme other vets dont want to believe it...many breeders dont want to believe it,,,because they go buy a bottle of vitamin c from the store and think that is what you use....not so....

Many on this board have drilled us over and over....raw meat      raw veggies.....and also avoid grains in your dog,,,,,grains are not natural for dogs, and are often very hard to digest......

It has been stated that 50 years ago there were a lot less HD>..you know why..???????people fed scraps from the table and garden and gave the dogs the meat scraps, because many homes that raised dogs, had dairy cows, goats and sheep, and killed and dogs got all scraps and milk from these animals  as puppies......   Vitamin C in natural form, not chemical,,,strengthens the immune system and stabilizes the collegen....Many sailors that were defecient in Vitamin C, got scurvy.....Scurvy was loose joints,  loose bones and teeth, that fell out.....

Loose joints on Hips is what HD basically is......and the joint destroys itself, no collagen...tohold them into the socket firm and deep....

Dont wast your money on Vit c unless it is natural source......feed the right foods and the dogs ,which by the way., also produces its own vitamin c,,in most cases...but like all animals...there are those that dont produce enough,   just like some humans dont produce the right amounts of harmones,,,etc....

Heavy Vit c in diet may be the best help we can give our German Shepherds, naturally, from a baby pup to adult hood...and it doesnt come from dog food.....

yellowrose--my dog likes to eat/ steal tomatoes from the garden, i've never seen a dog that would willing eat veggies r fruit like he does, much less gobble them down! but im worried about what he does steal, i know some things are bad for the dog even tho we would think they were good for them cause they're good for us. for instance, i fed boss a handful of raisins one day , then read the same/or the next day that raisins were toxic for dogs....so i was wondering if anyone knew what bad or good viggies + fruit were good for them, if vitiman c is best given naturally, can i give him oranges if hes willing to eat it ?---i could mix it with meat if he doesnt wanna eat it alone, he'll eat anything mixed with meat.....just wanted to find out whats safe cause my hubby's grandpa has 3 large gardens here and we have so much fresh veggies growing that we just throw out anything that is 'starting' to go bad--hate to waste what i could feed to the dogs....

grapes and raisens are not good     brocolli is bad for pups   have to wait till get an adult for brocolli......slightly blanche most veggies andmix   carrots need to be slightly cooked  only slightly   of  shred them    dogs dont chew  they swallow whole and carrots will come right out....Cook potatoes as raw ones have some effects on digest,,,Ill have to look that back up ,forgot what raw does in the potatoe........actually throw them all in a pot and slightly cook   leaving almost raw,,,,,like a stew and dish it up in baggies and add to daily meat.....yes fruit is good   The Sailors on the ships , years ago to prevent   scurvy,,the depletion of vitamin C  , were told to eat lemons and limes.....so if your dog will eat tomatoes, that one of a kind ,and great    ,  oranges ,peaches, or  apples   not the seeds as they are poisonous.....no cherries  Ill get the list out of other fruits that are not good.....forgot all of them and I havae to go get batteries for camera  in a hurry   Its storming in   TEXAS   again//////

I put lemons and limes in everything and use a lot of them   and tomatoes also....always been healthy     and    Omega 3 and Omega 6 and DHA's are also influencial in helping the elasticity of the joints in dogs and humans,..................good ole   fish and fish oils    natural ones in the wild    should say    wild salmon   on the oils    AMway makes good vitamins,,,,they dont use insecticides or junk to bind the vitamins...but natural c will have to come from a pet supplier of natural vitamins    a vendor......I can give a link    or any   like   naturepet.com
