Ok Shandra just had puppies (Congratulations again, love the pictures) and she was tring for a small litter.

Is there any proof for the theory  small litter X amount of lock ups?

What is the normal times of locking up?

What is the normal times IF paying for a stud fee?

What is your route for studding ? (I E   on the 13 day and 15th day)

Come on breeders lets hear it :)

Most stud owners give 2 breedings... most of us use progesterone assays to determine ovulation so we know when to breed. Most people don' t have a lot of extra time to mess around with.. stud owners don't want to have to keep the bitch forever and who can blame them?

Although 4 times is a HUGE amount if breedings (most I've done is 3 breedings with a day in between).. the amount of pups you will get will depend on the number of eggs she releases, the quality of the males sperm and the point at which ovulation takes place in relation to  those breedings. People say sperm live for anywhere from 2 days to a week when covered live.. chilled and frozen are different obvioulsy.

Length of ties can range from 10minutes to close to an hour..

Hope this helps

Speaking from personnal experience, our dogs have larger litters when we breed twice on the  9th and then again on the 12th day.  As for the length of the tie... they say the longer the better... We've been satisfied with at least 15 min. ties.  This has produced litters of 10 or more almost every time with different dogs over a 13 year period.  If we wanted a smaller litter we bred only one time on the 12th day.  This has been successful at producing litters under 10,  our last numbering 7...  Can't say if these dogs were just large producers or small producers but the female we bred last is famous for 14 pup litters with two ties...  We only bred her once this time and ended up with 7... Whew!!!

Personally I let them lock up 1-2 times  on the 15th or 17th day as this has always worked for me .
