I am still trying to under stand line breeding. Would 5-6,6 on SG Lord vom Gleisdreieck be considered a good line breeding. What would be the pros and cons for this. Thanks.

Line breeding for prepotency is only relevant close up and true to genotype/ phenotype for desired characteristics. 5-6,6 is so far out as to be irrelevant. Such a breeding is generally regarded as having NO inbreeding, as most pedigrees do not list past the 5th generation. With this in mind there have been many top producers with minimal or no linebreeding. On the negative side multiple far out linebreeding has an effect of narrowing the gene pool and so suppressing hybrid vigor without appreciably improving consistency of production. To that end one or two close up lines (2-3 or 3-2) are safest and most effective with strict adhesion to consistent phenotype for the desired characteristics. Best Wishes, Jonah

jdh-  so a 5-5 on Lord would also be too far out also?  what would you think about a 3-3 on Quax vom Patscherkofel and a 4-4 on Jenny vom Patscherkofel both using the same sire and dam with a 5-5 on Lord?

Agar,

While my knowledge of these lines is not adequate to comment on specific dogs, I have no problem with the line breeding stated. I must reiterate, however, that the specific characteristics of the breeding pair supercede all theoretical benefit of linebreeding. Best Wishes, Jonah
