Any idea who the dog was, and the owner, in the beginning of the movie Gladiator?

Whoever it is, they've got a one well-trained wolf dog.
The wolf was sacred to the ancient Romans, as he was a symbol for Mars, the Roman god of war. Quite appropriate to be used in that movie scene.

I remember the dog being obviously a GSD, but colored like a wolf (dyed or otherwise disguised to look like a wolf). In the time the movie was set, obviously there were no "GSD" and so the dog was probably supposed to be a wolf or hybrid. But I think it was a GSD made up to look similar to a wolf. Doubt seriously it was a wolf or hybrid actually trained for the part :)
and if anyone is into horses - in the time the movie was set, there also were no Appaloosas - yet there are some Appy war horses in the first part of the movie - guess they were short on horses or short on experts to tell them what was historically correct and what wasn't.

I was actually asking the dog if someone knew. Its pretty obvious that it was a working line GSD. Wolf/hybrid is out of the question.
Even in some of the fight scenes in which he attacks I'm pretty sure the actor was wearing a bite sleeve made to look like a metallic armour. There are scenes where the dog is attacking on the sleeve of the enemy and also doing body bites

Hello,
I actually met this dog in Question in the UK, at our 2 day National show, he was introduced to the crowed has the dog from the film Gladiator!
He is a super looking dog and was very well behaved, the crowed loved him!
This was a breed show to not working,

The dog was a gsd PEDIGREE working pedigree male owned by S Byfield bred by S Dunn (cant remeber the affix) all his brothers went to SCH home C Bell G Smith AND B Behan the dog himslef made SCH1 at the White Rose and was retired from sport due to ill health

I was actually very interested by that dog, looked to me like one of the very early GSD's.
