Naya's Mom

by Naya's Mom on 12 August 2007 - 21:08

Hello all,

I was wondering what the board's view on using a flirt pole. I saw one, and heard they were quite good for developing speed, cordination and drives in puppies, and were fun to play with. On the other hand, I had previously heard (on a different board) that these could be mis-construde as tools for training fighting dogs. Any way, I do want to buy one, but I don't want the fear of a neighbor looking over the fence and seeing something they saw on some stupid Animal Planet show, and calling the cops because I'm "Training a fighting dog"

Please people, don't bash me here...You all know I'm a newbie to the whole SchH training thing, and I only want constructive views here. Thank you in advance.

Email me privately if you don't want to post here. Thanks again!

What is it? Do you have a picture? How is it used?

Hey Gsdlvr2, even better, I have a link to the site where I want to buy it.

It is a giant fiberglass (or bamboo) pole (around 8-10ft long) with a rope attached to the end of it, and on the end you tie toys or treats, anything to entise the dog/puppy, and then you make the toy or treat on the end swing through the air as the dog/puppy tries to catch it, It really looks like great fun!

They work great!  Kust about everyone I know uses one to start bitework with a puppy.

Here is a little demo.....

Thanks so much GARD, I did bitework with my girl the old fashioned way, with rags, tugs and jute pillows. Had I know about this, it would saved me a bunch of bite marks when she finally caught the thing that made the rags, tugs, and pillows move...ME! Thanks again!

Did you get yours from a different person? The only thing I don't like about the flirt pole in the link I provided is that you can't attach your own things, it already has them. Oh well. THANKS AGAIN!

I looked at it. You could save yourself alot of money by using an old horse whip, fishing pole , or making something from a dowel, rope and elbow grease. GARD's ideas are similar to what I am talking about. This is for building prey drive in your dog? What have you done so far in that arena? What are you trying to accomplish?

It's the best puppy training tool you will have. They are simple to make. Get a 5 to 6 foot pole, string, and toy to tie to the end. I use burlap, light leather (car chamois) or,,,,,plastic bag from one of my favorite stores. I think the Taco Bell bags work best, must be the sauce.

As with any training device, seek expert instruction on how to use it. There's a big difference between shaking something in front of a puppy and developing a puppy's abilities.

Mine is a 4' horse whip. Any longer an they get too flexable. Mine is made out of fiberglass and about 1/4 inch in diameter. I use a burlap sack rolled up and I used a carpet cement to glue it place. Then I used three pieces of twine they use to hole the bales of burlap together. I wound the three pieces into a small rope. Tied one end to the top of my burlap and the ither end into the eye hole of the horse whip. I like to use a longer leagnth of rope between the piece of burlap vs a long whip.

I have one made from a fishing pole too. If you use a fishing pole, get a 6' heavy avtion rod. Anything longer or less weight makes them to flimsy.

Naya's Mom I sent you an e mail. I didn't mention in the e mail but ,technique is important with these tools. Too much movement is not a benefit ,neither is too little.
