Ok, I have a question... if you knew someone who told you this, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THEM.... ?

"We are going to breed this unpapered female because we want puppies" ?

And then proceeded to tell you they were making a "RESPONSIBLE" choice?

I'd say...................

"Go get a brain!"

They are breeding "Good Quality" (unpapered) puppies for "PET HOMES" only. Wow, how wonderful ... then they even have the balls to bash rescue, not realizing THEY ARE THE REASON RESCUES EXIST!!!! BYB's = PET OVERPOPULATION PROBLEM (MAJOR CONTRIBUTORS AS I SEE IT)

Ooooh where to begin on what you could say..........  Probably nothing that would not be a waste of breath.

I agree with PSP.  I don't believe there's anything you can say at this point that will sway them in their decision to breed.  Apparently, they see dollar signs or possibly want a puppy from "Fido" to carry on his lineage.

I do think this is where it is so important to try in a teaching sort of way to explain the "right" way of doing it and the why's of doing it this way.  I think most of these people really have no idea or insight to how they are ruining the breed.  Perhaps if someone showed them articles and gave them info to research "before" such breeding takes place, the person may be able to see at least a sliver of light as to why it's such a big deal not to just throw two dogs together for the sake of having a litter.  Even to go as far as showing them what OFA is all about and why we need to be sure it's done to ensure healthier hips, etc.

But then again, most that seriously want to do it the "right" way would probably have done at least "some" research already.

I just had a lady at work tell me about 3 German Shepherds that someone she knows is trying to place in homes due to the original owner being in Iraq and they cannot handle the dogs now.  Two are b&t males and one is a white female.  Apparently, the dogs are all "pure bred" but, "they cannot find the papers".  Anyway, this lady wants to take the white female who just happens to be in heat and has been garaged with these two males.  (I'd be very surprised if at least one of these males is not torn up.)  Anyway, the lady is sort of excited that this female may possibly be pregnant and she can sell the puppies!  Ugh.....people, wake up.

Then, there's a young girl at work who just had her mother buy a beautiful little female Boxer.  Well, already the girl is talking about maybe getting a male in the near future and having puppies.

Most of these people have no idea what goes into raising healthy puppies.  The time, effort, late nights, vet trips, possible complications, money and expenses of trying to home these puppies only to find later that some may very well end up in a shelter or worse.

People need to be educated so badly.  But, the majority are going to do it anyway.  And that's why these stupid spay/neuter laws will unfortunately be the norm.

"there are plenty of pets waiting for homes in the shelters and rescues due to people like you"

After that they will do whatever they want anyway.

You might try saying something to them like "well if you don't have her papers how do you know her pedigree? If you don't know that, how do you know the stud is not closely related to her and then the pups may have genetic problems?" The hip/elbow Certs. too that was mentioned already. Those are just simple things to think about but most likely it won't make a difference.

Hey why not be helpful and tell them that the best day to breed their female so they can produce a large money making litter would  be day 39 of her heat. To insure that the female is receptive, and the litter is large, it is best to keep the male and female apart until day 38. On day 38, let them play so the female can show him she is ready. Most likely on day 39, they will breed. I almost typed that all with a straight face!!!!!

Truer words were never spoken.  PSP and Animules are right.  The idiots  have humongous egos & are convinced people are going to believe they aren't in it for the money.  They are scum.

I would probably ask, "How much for a pup?"

"Really? That much?"

"I think I'll just go to the shelter and get a free one, but you sure are a generous and well to do person."

"Well because all of the time that you have to put into the litter, let alone the money!"

"Sure, you have to do the dew claws, probably first few rounds of shots, worming, and food, not only for the puppies, but the mom will eat around three to four times the amount she normally eats."

"Yes, you sure are generous!  You will probably end up paying about $100 for each pu when it is all said and done.  Just think if you had a litter of ten."

"Man do I give you alot of credit!  Your a better person than me."
