Daniel Heldreth is an extremely talented 16 year old helper.  I know he trains with Jim Hill but am not sure of anyone else he's trained with/under.

The sport needs more his age coming up.  Good luck to him and I hope his mentors teach him well.

One of the best young helpers I have seen is Patrick Hanrahan. He is a combination of athleticism and canine knowledge that you don't often see. He is presently a full back at the University of Alabama. He trains dogs and does helper work in his spare time (what little he has). He has a definite feel for dogs and will be one of the next great trainers in the sport; if that's his desired direction. He is presently handling a dog that is potential podium material for the upcoming Nationals; his problem is the Nationals conflict with football season.

What?  Football gets priority over SchH??  Oh heavens what is the world coming to?

One guy that I've seen that I really like is Joe Gribben.  He came to our club several times and he did excellent work.

Lets see here.  Go to the nationals and possibly win a plastic piece of garbage, mounted to a piece of fake wood or pursue an education and possibly a career in the NFL where he could sign a multi-million dollar contract, play for twelve years, retire, and have the rest of his life at the age of 34 to work and compete with dogs?  Besides, his daddy played for  a while.

Yes, Yes.  I know you were joking.

Joe Gribbon is excellent, but I wouldn't call him a youth helper :)  He'd like that though.  Kandi's son Alex is an up-and-comer, at 16 (almost?) years old, he's already certified trial helper - he's trained by Frank Phillips and he's doing great.  I saw Patrick Hanrahan work some dogs a few years ago at AWDF, when he was a teenager - and was very impressed.  He was an excellent helper and very strong.

As we baby boomers age, "young or youth " are relative terms....  Joe Gribben now works with my club on a regular basis.  There are not enough positive adjectives to describe this fellow:  athletic, sensitive, talented, open-minded, fair, caring, self-critical, dedicated, tough, and much more.  Joe himself credits many people as his mentors, most notably, perhaps, Kirby Hill.  Personally, I think that my club snagged a prize in his prime.  And, "Yes", everyone here is more than ready to help develop the next generation of "training helpers" for the future of our beloved breed.

Yes Gayle, you are indeed very lucky to have Joe, he's one in a million - great person as well as very good helper.  I wish he were way closer to me, I'd definately still be working with him if he were.
