Shepherd Woman

by Shepherd Woman on 05 August 2007 - 23:08

I noticed this one Chaos's nose the other day.  He has been going after the dog next door through our wood privacy fence.  Or trying to any way!  I'm not sure if this is pigment loss or maybe from rubbing on the wood?  It did have a speck of blood on it when I rubbed it with my hand.  And if it's from the fence, how the hell do I keep him from going after the other dogs on the other side.  All the yelling in the world isn't helping.  We have to physically go out there and get him!  Here's a pic of it.  Do any of you have this problem and know what it might be?

I think partly the summer thin hair and he's rubbing. From the picture it doesn't look troublesome but it is blurry. Now, I kind of hate to say this but, if all the yelling in the world isn't helping, and you have to go physically go get him to stop, you have an obedience problem. If I tell mine "No" or what ever command I use with them they stop dead in their tracks and do exactly what I say. Period, end of story. If they are in the middle of pooping and I say "NO, here" they stop and come to the "here" position.

Yes I think I am going to have to start getting physical with him.  He blows both my husband and my self off when we try to get him to come.  It's getting very frustrating.  He zones in on just these dogs, and to hell with us.  I think it's butt kicking time!  Thanks

No, It's not butt kicking time, or physical time . Just work on obedience. Sharpen it first without distraction and later add distraction, like the fence and other dogs. If you need help ,my e mail is posted. You are not even close to butt kicking IMO

If you are having trouble with him blowing you off, seems as though he is in charge and has no respect for you. Perhaps a trainer can asist you in how to get your dog to respect you. What if he were to run out the door into traffic? He needs to obey for hisown safety aswell as respecting you. Shouting and butt kicking are no way to get the dog to respect you.

You need to set boundaries with consequesces, Begin with all instruction on leash so he has no choice. Use his dinner not just treats. Make him work for everything! After all if you knew you were gewtting a pay check every week weather you worked or notwould you work? The food is the dogs pay check. I am not insinuating you starve him just give him incentive to do for you and your family. In search work we train the dogs first that everything good in life comes from the owner. Then we imprint victim loyalty.

Thanks K9.  He does go to obedience and does everything in class as he is suppose to.  It's at home and when he is outside that he blows us off.  In the back yard only though.  I can let him out my side door and tell him to go to the car and he will go.  Or I can let him out of the car and tell him to go to the house and he goes.  He has tunnel vision I guess when it comes to us and trying to get that other dog.

Well, Blitz used to do that to me too and all it took was one mild correction with an e-collar and now he comes like he's shot from a cannon.

I hope yours is just a fence problem sounds and looks as if it is. Thats what I thought with my then 6 year old running the fence at the dog next door.. His nose would get like flakey and actually pieces will fall off. He is 11 now used to put steroid drops on it to try and control but didn't work real well. I never got a diagnosis but I did run into someone who had a puppy from the same breeder and her dog had the same thing at 6 months old. Luckily she works for a vet so gets some extra assistance money and test wise. But there is a specific name for it, is his nose running  a lot for no reason? Thats one of the signs. My dog had all external signs, it would get crusty and flaky and then a piece would fall off and his nose would run, This has been going on for years I'm surprised he still has a nose doesn't bother him at all sure wouldn't win me any shows but then again she was and obviously still is a horrendous breeder, bad hips, 1 testicle, allergies, you name it, he and his family mambers have it.

You could get an electric fence charger and wire ( pretty inexpensive) and run that around the lower part of the fence until you have him where you want with obedience :). It usually only takes once.

I dunno my friend had a G Shep that was on an electric fence system and the dog would lie on the shock line and looked like he was enjoying it....Leave it to a german shephard they never cease to amaze me
