Hi everyone, I have recently moved to a climate that will be cold when my next litter is 6-8 weeks old. I anticipate moving them out to the barn when they are about that age due to limited inside space. The barn is large and has electricity. It has one room that is fairly well insulated and is not drafty. It already has one electric socket that will take a 250 watt heat bulb. What I would like to know is will that be adequate for pups going from inside to outside at a cold time of year? 30 degrees..give or take If that is not adequate, and I don't think it is, How can I improve on that now, while I have time? Thank you.

are you saying 30 or so degrees  inside or outside ....30 out side ;and dogs are inside .....i feel is ok....they are in out of inclimate weather , rain, snow ,wind etc........they could even be outside during the day....lots of straw both inside and outside.....it would be great for them better than being inside in the house...youre allowing them to be hunds.....being in the fresh air sunshine moonlight..yeah thats important also....

I am saying it could be 30 degrees outside temperature, could be less ,maybe not. Could be snow, sleet, wind outside. Depending what is outside will influence the barn but it will not be windy in the barn but if it is cold outside will be cold inside. The temperature in the barn will be close to the same as the outside temperature except for directly below the 1 heat bulb and it is 6 feet from the ground on the ceiling. { Previously this was a chicken house but will be cleaned well before any dogs in there also. } Will they need more heat if they are used to a house that is 75 degrees and then a barn that is 30 degrees?

gsdlvr2 I bought an Econo Heater last year to put in the shed that attaches to my kennel. It is 8' W x 16' L the ceiling goes from about 5'6" down to 4'. I bought it because it doesn't take much electric, no moving parts, works thru convection. I didn't use it  but got it in case we had alot of company at Christmas the dogs could tuff it outside (spoiled brats)! But I did turn it on to check on how it warmed the shed (it is insulated) and it kept water from freezing so above 32 degrees. I think it may have been 45 degrees in very cold weather( 0-10 degrees). The dog doors leak some too. Plastic on windows also. Here is a link. http://www.eheat.com/

I think only very young pups need a real heat source. I'm talking 4 weeks or less. They will sleep in a pile or next to mom and with hay, should stay warm enough. Like jade said, as long as they can get out of the wind and rain, they will be fine.

How nice for California girl to comment on cold!  You were probably in that bikini in the winter there.

Godfadda, with all due respect. As head of the family, is that all the input you have as far as winter puppies?

Just because 4 pack lives in California doesn't mean she has never lived in a cold place nor does it discount her opinion.

I know you're  fooling around but seriously, as head of the family I expect a little more from you

Please don't have me whacked for being outspoken

I am very excited about this upcoming litter and want to make sure I am prepared before the mating next week or so since I have never had to put them out in bad weather.

So what! Yea I wear my bikini in winter, under my heating blanket at night. LOL

Yes I have lived a few other places, all colder than here in winter and I actually would like to move anywhere cooler. Anybody wanna swap houses? I can't take the heat here in summer anymore.

I live in Alaska. You are going to need a safer electric heater for the insulated room in the barn.  A doogie door to a pen outside will make good puppies that are easy for new puppy owners to housebreak.  They literally teach themselves not to go inside their "nest area".  If you build a threshold on the outside...a divided structure that helps stall the wind so that it does not blow through the doogie door...then your puppies can learn to eliminate outside rather than in their living space.  Many puppies can get through the doogie door at three weeks.  You may want to build your threshold so that you can close the puppies up inside and they cannot go outside, when it is both cold and very windy or wet.  I see the wind as your main concern, rather than the cold, for when the puppies go on excursions outside.  Mine are all going outside by four weeks on short excursions to explore and eliminate in the snowy pen, and they make it back up the ramp just fine.

Good luck.  Veronica
