a friend called me and stated that the humane society had visited him and told him he had to have a breeders license (he currently has a litter of Irish setters) as well as provide them with license on all his dogs.  He lives in the county and did not think he needed a license, I actually didn't think that either, how many of you are aware of all the ordinances in your area regarding the restrictions on owning or breeding dogs?

There is usually county codes.  Many people living in "the county" seem to think if they aren't in "the city" the are no dog ordinances.  Yup, there are.  Most of the time it's the same or very similar codes, including leash laws.

Hi von symphoni

I live in Allegheny County PA in a small town south of Pittsburgh.  Our County requires a license for each dog past the age of six months. However, the Town I live in has a limit of 3 PETS per household. The thing that ticks me off about this is there are some bad neighborhoods around here where many cats and dogs are left to run free. I, on the other hand, have almost 2 acres and a large fenced area for my dogs. I can't have an invisible fence because it would not prevent the occasional wandering Pit Bull from coming IN, and believe me, unfortunately, most are bred by fighters. Not all are used for fighting but let's just say they don't come from the best breeding stock and small children are left to be in "control" of them.  I currently have 3 dogs and would like to add another to the mix in the near future. The only way to get around it is to license the fourth at my hubby's business address. He has an auto repair shop and actually takes my GSD to work with him, as he would the new one.  He wouldn't leave him there but who's to say he can't come to the house for an overnight visit on a daily basis?? :o)

The shame of it is the people they make the laws and ordinances for are the ones who don't license dogs they only keep for a few months at a time and they could really care less. It's the responsible owners who are willing and able to properly care for and love any number of animals who have to abide by the letter of the law.

Where I live in NY,small country town, you can have as many dogs as you want.I have a kennel license. I live on 50 acres on the top of a mt., surrounded by state land. You can ride the woods for hours without seeing anyone.

We have a dog catcher that obviously doesn't have anything better to do than drive around and count dogs.(he knows I take in a rescue here and there and makes it his business to check) The problem I have is that he comes to my house ,usually after dark or just as it is getting dark. I live alone with my dogs, so naturally when anyone comes to the house, they do what they are supposed to, alert me and INFORM them.

Well this guy has pepper sprayed my dogs several times. The last time I lost it on him.I told him don't come back here, you can check at the clerks office if I'm lacking a license, my dogs are doing their jobs. And who the hell do you think you are, coming at night? Does he not think these dogs remember him when he comes back?

Are there not better things for the guy to spend his time doing? It's almost as if he were asking to get bit.

We live deep in the urban jungle and the city allows a total of 3 dogs/cats and/or ferrets. However you can apply for a mutipet permit to increase your limit (which we did w 4 dogs and 1 cat) you have to have 80% of the neighbors within 100ft of your propert line sign off as well as go through an inspection that they do annually. It wasnt much of a hassel although I guess I could see issues if your neighbors hate you and it is unrelated to your dogs.

A new law passed in Virginia that requires vets to notify the county whenever they give a rabies vaccination.  The county will then send you a bill for your new licence.

That is the law in VA.

Which I hate.

Makes no freaking sense. I just rescued a BC on the side of the road brought it in for a rabies... i will be curious to see what happens. Found it's owner 48 hours later... you can bet I won't be tickled pink if I have to pay for a tag. I will have the vet write that I rescued it and returned to the owner but i refused to bring it to my kennel without a shot!

The vets aren't crazy about the added paperwork either.

In PA we can buy a lifetime license. I don't remember how much it costs, but it's good for the life of the dog. All I needed to do was fill out an application, the county issues the license and a number which must be tatooed on the dog, inner right thigh.

The local dog law enforcement officer  can check the records of all the boarding kennels. The owners are required to keep a record on every dog they board - owner, address, breed, name, and the name of the vet. I assume they use those records to check to see if the dog is current on it's rabies vac. I'm not sure about the requirements for a kennel license since I no longer have multiple dogs.

Funny that Virginia is so strick about licensing dogs since that's where Vick and Bad Newz kennels had their dog fighting ring established for years. I guess that one fell through the cracks?

In my "city" we have a 3 dog limit, which I am one over and have been for 5 years!  :)

I just don't register the old girl and haven't for 5 years!  I register the GSD's.

When I stopped registering the old girl I told them that she moved to Florida.  I just hope that she doesn't bite anyone, since she is actually overdue for rabies.  But, I'm not about to vaccinate the 17 year old with multiple probs!
