Hi,

Anyone can advise me? My puppy of 7 months old is not eating much these 2 days. He would want/beg to eat our food and not his own. We dont feed him food we eat except last thurs, mother- in-law fed our puppy some cooked steak (which i didnt like) and he has been very picky with his food then on. Do u think that steak dinner disrupted his eating habits? My husband and I fed him dry food for breakfast then dog food for lunch and dinner. A little milk in between his lunch and dinner. We have tried different brands hoping that he will eat his food but not much changes still.

Just last week, he went through blood test and was given interceptor heartworm tablet (monthly routine) but his appetite was still alright. So not sure what's happening to him..

Our puppy is a very playful, curious and observant..his eating habbits been alright since last week.

Also, it is a bad habbit to leave his food for his access whole day? he used to finish his food at just ONE time and never leave scraps for later. Since his quarantine, his habbits kindda change. Pse comment.

Thank you very much!!

alexis,  I had a picky pup for a while,  I was advised to 1.  give the pup some yogurt with food just mix it into the dry food,  and also to NOT leave anything he did not eat within about 3 minutes down for him,  in other words allow him to eat but if he leaves the bowl,  pick it up,  I was feeding him about 4 to 5 X's a day while he went through this finicky stage...   Stop the milk in between meals would also be my recomendation.  But I don't know why your doing that,  if there is some reason for it,  Then disregard the recomendation to stop milk.

Try Solid Gold Hundenflocken Puppy Food,  see if he likes the palatability of it,  Ours sure do !!    Good Luck and maybe someone else will have some more suggestions for you as well.

A  puppy's growth rate slows down after 6 months, so this could be perfectly normal. How much are you feeding him? Maybe he just doesn't need that much food now that his growth rate is tapering off.

My pup is almost 8 months. She gets 2 1/2 cups of dry food 2x a day, with a vitamin supplement, and that's it. She cleans up her food in just a couple of minutes, then checks Ranger's dish for crumbs before I put them outside!

two times food for 7-month old is really enough. You could mix the dry food some days with stock of cooked cow-meat... later again only dry food, not to much. My female test me and my nerves often with such "I don¿t want eat" - but it¿s only a test for to get the better food from own food :-)

Don't see why he needs milk, dogs can't digest milk.... yogurt or cottage cheese is best.. at 7 months feed twice a day andpickit up after a ew minutes... NO Free feeding!

I wouldn't be changing foods now. A healthy dog will not intentionally starve itself. There are several factors to look at....1) if the temps are warmer, sometimes dogs don't need to eat as much  2) the dog is finding a way to get other food you havent found out about yet  3) Maybe a smart dog and figures you will give in.

Do you free feed? put the food down and leave it down until it is gone? if you do, stop that. Put the food down, for 15 minutes if the dog doesn't eat or eat all of it, pick it up, put it away, and put it back down at the next feeding time. After a day or two of that, without any treats, your dog will eat when food is put down, if the dog is healthy. Most dogs can go a day or two without a meal and be fine.

I have a 7 month old who gets fed twice a day, he has never refused a meal. BUT, if he walks away from his bowl of BARF, he KNOWS one of the other dogs considers it fair game. He eats when it is meal time, no ands, ifs, ors about it.

I agree with DeesWolf. No healthy dog will stage a hunger strike. Barring any parasites or digestive system malfunction, when he is really hungry-he will eat. DKiah is correct about the milk. Only a dam's milk or a goat's milk is suitable for dogs and plain yogurt is much better. A puppy can be temporarily spoiled when given foods it likes better than it normal food. Place the food in front of him, give him a few minutes to eat, and then remove it. This will condition him very quickly to eat when the food is available.

Competition from other dogs is a healthy activity, provided no fighting is allowed. I feed all of mine together on my back porch and no one leaves a dish with any remaining food.

I have learnt my lesson the hard way here is my learning

1) EVERY DOG IS DIFFERENT. ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL. So with food and diet.

You can try raw/ veggies/eggs/ Kibble. You will have to try with your dog. Every dog has different genetic makeup. Some do very well with kibbles ( And all kinds  of dry food in the market) Some do well with raw. etc etc etc

You have to experiment with your dog to see what suits him best,

The best option is ask your breeder. He is the best judge( If he knows his bloodlines) What suits your PUP.

Milk is dicey. Your best option is keep away from it. If you have to give for sensitive stomach give him churned very liquid yougurt/curd juice. Thats excellent for dogs with sensitive stomach. Pure milk is generally BAD for dogs.

Less than 6 months ---->  Feed 3 times a day

Above 6 months 2 times a day.

Ask your breeder what diet will suits your Pup's bloodline. every DOG is different PERIOD

My guess is alexis97 does not want to go RAW by trying to be careful not feeding food they eat. If he seems healthy and normal my guess is he isn't growing so doesn't need to eat much right now. My pup too is 7 months almost 8 actually, where does the time go? I do feed RAW but also some dog food. At times she doesn't seem very hungry, even with the meat, so it gets picked up and offered again at night feeding. Then there are days she cleans up everything and still looks hungry. Sometimes I will give her a little kibble and she will snarf it too. Also ditto on the milk unless goat milk and go to twice a day feedings. You might bring in a stool sample, round worms can make a dog not hungry from what I have read. But usually they would also look unthrifty ~ dull coat, pot belly, etc
