The organisation and running of the Show by the GSD Club of Northern Ireland was outstanding, the venue and hospitality fantastic, and I look forward to attending their next 2 Day Show in 2011, God willing. You would all be well advised to make a special effort to attend the "Two Day Show in Northern Ireland"

The Judge of this Show was in my opinion one of the worst SV Judges I have ever seen. The inconsistency between his comments and his Judging decisions was staggering. His judging method in some classes was to say the least confusing.

Having said this I really enjoyed my week-end in Larne, and enjoyed watching the excellent entry of 221 for this show. There were many excellent males and females in all classes, and many excellent winners.

I would make special mention and a very special thank you to David & Sharon Bowen, superb trainers, and Andrew Connolly, superb handler of my dog CH. Ice vom Steinhauerberg, who looked and performed magnificently, achieving V2 in Open Male class. I was overwhelmed by the fantastic comments about Ice from so many GSD afficionados present at the Show and who watched him in his class, my sincere thanks.

I must agree with Videx, I came to the show after a few years out very much looking forward to seeing the dogs and watching the SV judge and listening to his opinions and values. The first day he made it very clear to the importance of Size reduction and Soundness, I was quite impressed at first, until he started to actually judge. He placed inferior smaller dogs/bitches higher than better bigger ones on the first day, ok a catch 22 but his system and critiques were simply laughable, the 2nd day he seemed to forget his morals of the 1st day by giving the top overall position to a dog who in type from the side is not bad but he was probably the most unsound dog I have seen in a long time and his size is maybe 68 or 69 centimetres, this dog was over 2 years old and not even in the open class. The open class in itself was I must say better than I expected to see, a large quality class with 7 or 8 super males, ICE of course catches the eye amongst others, the class before was won by Fabius, first time of seeing him also, correct size and tremendous movement and showmanship, I liked very much the juniour winner, Zamp Thermados son from Amulree kennel. It came down to the Zamp son and the eventuall winner, the judge moves them away to see for soundness, it was clear at that moment for all to see that there had to be only one winner in that situation between the 2, one was sound and the other was very unsound, the SV judge then gave the top place to the oversize very unsound dog, probably the worse National winner ever, overall the judging was as poor as you will ever see, only the bitch winner was what made my day, a super German female of Correct size, she came from Germany with big reputation, maybe the SV judge got that right but then gave the dog best of breed, crazy weekend and not a good example for aspiring judges.

Shamrock

Thanks very much for your comments on Ferdinand, our junior dog.

With regards in general to the show - I very much enjoyed the judging performance of Herr Gothe.  Yes he made some odd decisions but I have NEVER been to a show where I agreed with all of the judges choices, and recently there have been much worse performances!

The open dog class was most impressive  - but a hard class to judge I thought as each had different qualities.  The winner would not have been the one I would have chosen - but I was not the judge.

The DOG CC was a real surprise - but the dog makes an impressive picture side on as he moves around the ring.  I saw a male go V2 a few weeks ago in germany and all I could see in his favour was performance and colour.  It happens!  Thats why we ask different people to judge each show - otherwise there would never be any point in going. It adds to the enjoyment and excitement of the show.

I agree wholeheartedly with your opinion on the BCC - she is beautiful and I have liked her since her arrival in the UK some time ago - but Im sure the owner would tell you herself she was disillusioned with some of her placings last year - NOT ALL JUDGES see the quality in front of them. As I said, it happens.

Yes, the judge made points about SIZE and made points about SOUNDNESS but he did his own thing and at the end of the day thats all I ask.

If winners had been predictable this messageboard would be alight with fuming showgoers too.

It was a show with a great atmosphere, the entry was very high in quality, the weather great, the venue great and the bar very reasonable (lol)

Every dog will have his day.  Congratulations to 'Tye' on his - I am sure his owners are genuinely thrilled.

And if i may add...

I had a conversation with a good friend of mine about german judges after the BGSDTC show.

For me the difference is that they will often judge the attributes of a dog or bitch AGAINST its faults and assess the animal.  IMO too many british judges judge the fault and can see nothing more.

As I say - I would not have judged as he did - but, like most, thoroughly enjoyed the show.
