Today was grooming day for my dogs right after I started noticing how my carpet was getting filled up with dog fur right after it was vacuumed couple of nights ago.
I took each individual dog outside to be groomed. I took my male, Jake out first to be groomed. Jake is a short hair but I manage to take out a lot of his under coat, which at the end looked like a dead carcass was in my yard and that the vultures took away the remainder of the carcass. I then took out Zambi, Shes something else! It's amazing how much she sheds! She was 10x worst (Note: she behaved very well!) of removing undercoat then Jake. It took twice as long, with a lot of sweat to remove her lose undercoat. It seems that I have to go twice as deep around her thighs area because the lose thick undercoat fur doesn't seem to want to get out smoothly and it's way deep in there, obviously Zambi doesn't like me doing this but I have to in order to keep my house halfway clean :D After doing her, my yard again looked like something was dead.
Is anybody else's dog is having a major shedding at this time in the year?

lol brittany,
i always feel like there's major shedding around here.
let's see. my girl is due to come into season so she's blowing her coat like crazy and is now a partially bald GSD it seems.
my male seems to have quieted down with his shedding but was shedding pretty bad a couple of months ago. he's not a real big shedder normally. then my main culprit is the 10 1/2 year old spayed female who is NON STOP. she's definitely the kind of dog that you are never done brushing her!

Rezkat5, Ah a bald German shepherd seems ok with me LOL
I always wanted to know what a bald GSD looks like. I often feel like getting the clippers out and shave both of my dogs down so I wouldn't have to worry about grooming them for a while :D My floors would spotless too :)
Zambi isn't ready to go back in heat, She just had hers about a couple of months ago :) I wish you the luck with your female.
Jake isn't a big shedder either, It seems that males don't shed much, am I correct? I guess major shedding is more like a female thing?

my long coat is a great () shedder. i have vacuumed more in the last 13 months than in the rest of my life all together! but, don't don't don't shave your dog!!! angus had his leg shaved from foot up past his shoulder when he had his elbow surgery and i gotta tell ya, it was like a giant plucked black and pink chicken. yuck and sooo pathetic. just picture that when you have to unclog your vacuum for the umpty dozenth time! i'll take vacuuming any day.

i've seen one or two. looks pretty stupid! shaved. intact females tend to go blow their coat sometimes a month or two before going into season. so she may be in sooner than you think. :) my spayed female was the same when she was intact and it was nice. my girl now, you can't get anything off of her in between seasons. i've got a new brush that i have yet to really use, called a furminator. this looks like it has a partial clipper blade on it. so can't wait to take it to the older girl. it's always a battle, but there are times when it's manageable and then there are times when it is out of control!

If you will get an undercoat rake You can find it at walmart, looks like a hand rake, it really does the job on those long thick undercoats without pulling the outer guard hairs. I use them on my GSD as well as the St. Bernards and Gr Pyr's that come in.

I purchased the furminator a few weeks ago - based on a previous post on this board. It works great on Libby's coat - which is a thicker - slightly plushy coat. It pulls most of the under coat out - very easily. Falon's coat is not as plushy - and it works ok. I don't like it on Molly's long coat. I prefer the rake on her. I think this year the shedding seems much worse then I remember in the past. I have been vacuuming everday and still fur all over the kitchen floor by the time I put the vacuum away!
I also took them to the groomer last week. I pay for a guarantee shed out, which means if they shed within 4 weeks of the groom, you can take them back and they will rebrush them. This is the first time that I ever had to take them back.

i wouldn't like to use it on a long coat either, but the stock coats i think that it looks great. and i suppose that if i were showing my dogs i wouldn't want to use it there either. :)
speaking of vacuuming i really outta go do that now!!
i will take them to the groomer every once in a while too because they have the high powered dryer. which is on my wish list. :)

Mine is blowing her coat also and due to come into season too. What a mess. I have to vacuum every single day. Well the fact that there's messes from their bones all over the house contributes too. My 1 year old boy doesn't have much of an undercoat because of the heat down here anyway. He just likes to tip his water bowl. Picture water and fur mixed together. Yuck.

Well Brittany if misery likes company, you have it!! My kids are all a bit differnet but if iIdon't vac everyday it shows, and right now I have 4 (one my sons dog) leaving their coat all over. I take a rake out on our walks and I think it must help, but not sure by the looks of the carpet.
