SchHBabe

Well I've gotten tired of search Amazon.com for this book to come out, so I guess I'll have to stick my neck out and ask my dumb questions here on the forum.  :)

How can you tell if a dog is from an DDR kennel or WGR?  Is there a list of DDR kennels somewhere out there?  I would like to learn more about reading pedigrees.

When I look at pedigrees I look at the names for clues:  Max van Tiekerhook - "van" is used for Dutch kennel names.  Grim z PS - "z" means Czech as well as weird letters with accent marks on top.  But German is German on both sides of the old Wall.

Of course, anyone can throw a "von der" in their kennel name, but for some of the historic kennels - is there a list?

Anyone got any better hints for deciphering peds?

If you look up a dog like this one... www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/17648.html

you will see a DDR in front of his registration right below the picture.

Well that's an easy one.  But what if the dog was born recently, say in the US, and registered with AKC, but all the dogs are of DDR lineage (or WGR).  Does the dog's AKC registration number have anything to do with country of origin?  I would guess "no".

So harddawg, what about this pedigree?  http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/512582.html

What the heck language is that?  There's not even any vowels in it.  LOL

Hey Yvett -

It takes some research, and you may have to go to the 7-generation pedigree to trace back which dogs were straight DDR when they were transferred over to the SV. But you have my email, so when in doubt, ask :)

As for the DDR Kennels, there are really very few still breeding straight DDR in the scheme of things.  Haus Iris and Grafental are a couple of the best known kennels doing DDR dogs; Ritterberg and Haus Kaiser are a couple of the old Kennels that went straight showlines after the wall came down, but only recently they have had a couple of DDR litters again; Ludwigseck , Poppitz, Haus Fasold, Ellernbach used to be DDR, vom Eis,  Schaferliesel was DDR, but folded, Heimaturt, Gleisdreieck was an old respected DDR kennel but they do a lot of east-west now, vd Grauen v Monstab, Feurigen, Geraufer, Haus Dabbert, Teuritzer Eck, Weltwitz, Hellersteg, Hauental,  Sperlingsbucht and Steinbusch use a lot of DDR, Dollnitztal, Dalwigerholz, Klockow's,  Kloedener Riss, Koboldwiese, Konigswaldereck, Kranich's Hof, vd Moschel, Old Lady, Osterburg Quell, Parchimer Land, Ratsberg, Schotterhof, Schwarzhorn, Schwedenschanzen, Wartenberg, Buttstadter Flur, Wolfshohle, Baruther Land... list goes on

Felsenschloss was almost exclusively DDR, but I don't know if Herr Schawe is still breeding.  Clausberg is no longer breeding.

Again, if all else fails, email me.

Alt Ost Land,

Thanks!  Great list.  I'm going to tuck that one away for future reference.  That's the kind of answer I was looking for.

Steve,

Sorry dude, I'm a REDHEAD.  (Hint... the one on the RIGHT)  Heh heh.

harddawg, your pics frighten me! LOL I haven't seen that movie yet, so I'm probably missing something in these pics.

SchHBabe, you keep asking questions until you get the answers that make sense. There are allot of things about dog peds and registrations worth asking about. I just read my old girls ped, who passed on recently. With the fancy German writing I thought her old owners tried to trial her in a 3 again and she failed. It turned out it was an FH she didn't make. After that, she was never trialled again. Old papers are good to keep and reference back to years later when they actually make some sense. I missed or didn't understand allot looking at them the first time.
