Got his meds at vet visit late afternoon yesterday. Once a day so figure I'll give them in the morning. Now I realize I forgot to ask if they are chewable or have to swallowed. I HATE the swallows with him. He's pushing six months and is a handfull to say the least.

It's called Metronidazole  it's 2X daily for a month.

Thanks,

Dawgs

dawgs if he is hard to give pills to try this..... get yourself some liverwurst. Its pretty pastie and dogs think its to die for. At least all of mine do. Make a small ball around the pill and just toss it to him. If he doesn't snarf it I would be surprised.

Amazing isn't it that a dog who will eat anything and everything will balk at a tiny little pill.  Every dog I have had has quickly mastered the art of finding the pill buried in a treat and spitting it out.  The best way I have found is to just open their mouth and pop it far enough back in their throat that they have to swallow.  You have to be quick.

PSP I know what you mean about hiding the pills but my vet recommended liverwurst for a female of mine because she had stitches on her muzzle and her gum. It worked fantastic and has worked everytime with every dog I tried it with since.

So, if he can have it wrapped in liverworst (finally a USE for liverworst) it doesn't matter if he actually chews it up? I never know if dog things are chewable or should be swallowed whole. Or if it even really matters.

chewable ='s  "supposedly" great flavor,    either way it's in the gut and disolving, chewed or not.   I think Chewable just is supposed to mean easy to administer...

For an adult who can NOT swallow pills,  I have to have everything chewable or liquid for any meds needed.  Pharmacy guys hates me.  LOL

Ok, that's what I felt was the case but didn't know if I was missing something. Thanks, guys

Metronidazole is  not considered a "chewable".  It is pretty bitter tasting and will more than likely have to be hidden in something very tasty if you don't want to do the "shove" method. It doesn't have to be chewed up or anything, it can go down whole.

dawgs if he does like my dogs it is just gone in a gulp. Give him a little ball first w/o a pill, I think once he tastes the liverwurst the next one you toss at him will be swallowed whole. Let us know how it works on him.

Once saliva hits metronidazole, the animal will foam at the mouth from the very bad taste! I am currently giving it in liquid form to one of my fosters. She absolutely hates it, but it is easier to get it down her than trying to stop her from taking the meat or cheese off the pills. She foams at the mouth and drools for a good hour, plus drinks  a lot of water to get the taste out.

At the shelter we sometimes give the pills to dogs in a small ball of live and chicken cat food. Dogs dont care about the pill, they want the cat food.
