I have my two gsds on Iams and they are both doing great on it. However two of my friends are trying out Solid Gold and swear it is the best dog food ever..............Just wondering if that $40 is worth it for a 35# bag. Iams is $28 for a 44# and one bag lasts 3 weeks for two dogs. One of my friends thought I should put Nenz on another brand's senior less active formula. At five, when he walks up to 8 miles a day with me.....I said I don't think so. I would appreciate any feedback on Solid Gold dog foods. Thanks.....

Years ago, I fed Solid Gold Millenium to one of my dogs. She did very well on it for the first year of her life. I considered keeping her on it until she was diagnosed with CRF. At that time I chose to abandon commercial kibbles and work with a raw diet. I will tell you that I know several people who use it and their dogs do very well on it. Like with all dog foods, it does take time to determine if it is the right food for your dog. Each dog is different, some do well, and some do not. It also takes 2 to 4 weeks to really determine if the food is the right one for the dog. Depending on your dog's level of activity, and individual needs, the protien level in certain commercial foods maybe too high or too low.
So, IMO for some dogs, Solid Gold is good. It is just a matter of determining which "flavor" is the right one for your dog.

We Love it, Yes it's spendy but we really love it, in fact a pup we took back when a purchaser divorced and moved, That dog went through the most horrific looking stage with his coat and condition, OMG I could not figure out what was going on, a trip to the vet and our vet revealed that he felt the dog was actually detoxifying, did not know that could actually happen but it was his explanation, Now the dog is coming back into a beautiful coat and great condition, He's gorgeous. I also used to feed Eukanuba, Iams, and Diamond blended, now we just use the Solid Gold.

A friend of mine urged me to use solid gold for my puppy that was pretty under weight when I got him; since using this only for about 3-4 weeks I noticed a huge difference in growth, weight and even the condition of his coat. It's expensive and I don't feed my adult dog the same food; in fact he gets Iams but his needs are not the same. It's gets to be a pain cause I goto 2 different stores to get dog food at the best prices and then to have 2 different foods to feed BUT for now this is what I need to do until I get the pup to where he needs to be. Hopefully if he develops well enough one day I can have them on the same food. If you're dog doesn't have any real need to be on a more expensive all natural diet then I'd say Iams is good enough. It's personal preference really. BTW the one plus with Solid Gold is definately less poop to scoop. You kinda gotta weigh out the good and the bad.

Hi! Check out some of the past threads on this dogfood - do a search on the messageboard - Solid Gold has been mentioned before. I have used it for my dogs and I loved it and preached about it to everyone I knew, but they hated eating it. I used absolutely every single one they made from Wolfcub to Millenia to Holistic to Hundenflocken and ended up adding the wet with it - talk about costly. It IS great food compared to anything you can buy at petsmart and all those average dogfoods out there like Iams, Eukanuba, Royal Canin, Blue, Science Diet, Nature's Choice, Nutro, Purina One, Dog Chow, Diamond, Pro Plan, Pedigree, etc., etc, **BUT the absolute BEST dry holistic dogfood I have found from trying SOOOO many is Canine Caviar ( http://www.caninecaviar.com ). It took about 3 weeks to a month to notice a difference with Solid Gold and my GSD's coat still was somewhat dry, but within 1 week (and I am NOT kidding!!!) of eating Canine Caviar, his coat was gorgeous and pigment started deepening - it was like some kind of miracle before my eyes and I am not overexaggerating or getting a penny for telling you this! But, if you do decide to get Solid Gold, it is good but you'll want to add supplements like their flax seed oil, Sea Meal, MSM powder, etc. (Their website is http://www.solidgoldhealth.com . )You won't have to do that with Canine Caviar. I have even put my dog on the BARF and he still looked better and was happier on Canine Caviar. :)

OH- PS - If you email Nannette Ferrell, a rep of Canine Caviar ( nannetteferrell@caninecaviar.com ), she will most definitely send you out some samples to try, too! And there are coupons on the site also.

Thank you all for your feedback......GSDLVR, I am not sure if anywhere around here sells Canine Caviar......I never heard of it before. I couldn't even find Solid Gold there, it's actually at a private grooming shop. Someone recommended Innova to my friends, but I can't find that either. Petco has almost everything else..............I just noticed Diamond last time in Petco, kind of curious about that one too.

I used Solid Gold-Wolf King with the older dogs and Wolf Cub with a puppy. I found it to be too rich for some of them and they got the runs. They had beautiful coats and looked great, but it was like a faucet. Some had no problem at all. If it wasn't for the two dogs, I probably would have stuck with it.

ilovemygsdnenz,
Look at the various dog food web sites, most have search options for retail locations near you. Some even have shipping options. We drive about 20 miles to get our Canine Caviar, the other foods we use, Orijen and Van Pattens Duck and Potato are in a store only about a mile away. The dog food web sites located the retailers for us. Give that a try to find the one you want closer to home.

I must state upfront--- My experience with Solid Gold is almost ten years ago. I even worked part time for a distributor while looking to purchase his business. With 50 plus years in dogs I can tell you it is the ONLY dog food I have personally tasted and eaten. Tastes like some kind of "health food" cracker. Much better when stirred into yogurt. I was mixing it for a bouvier in the boarding kennel. I actually got 3 of 4 gals using the training room to taste it and they thought it was pretty good! Tasty! (They obviously did NOT know it was dog food!) The 4th gal came over and knew what it was------ I can personally attest to quality and taste. At that point in time, there was no way to keep weight on a German Shepherd Dog feeding it. There may be formulation changes eliminating that situation since.
