Is the AKC killing the GSD??

The AKC seems to be a charity fund to only file paperwork. Why can they not follow the german breeding programs such as having only titled dogs to be beedable. That sure would get more clubs to start showing up and bring the real working GSD to the US. They claim they are trying to improve them breed, yet anyone that has silly paperwork  can breed their dogs and think they have the best dogs because they are AKC.

Well at least they are not breeding mutts and charging $1500.00 for them and registering them with APR or CKC, or the many bullcrap registeries out there.

Well, I think the AKC is working hard at recognizing the Shiloh Shepherd first.

Good question. I often wondered why the snot remarks coming from AKC Show Breeders regarding the Working GSD or Rottweiler while posting on another forum. I'm glad you asked this question on this forum, there's a better defence here of these two breeds. Interested in hearing from all you on this.

Also, I've noticed there's a social challange between show and working owners of Rottweiler and GSD. I understand and back the German side of this arguement. And for some reason the AKC Show Breeders hatefully disagree with me.

The AKC is not doing many breeds any favors.  I'm glad you brought that up.  There are many here that believe breed standards do mean something and do try to educate people on the whys and hows behind them.  Often those people are "scolded" for trying to share their knowledge by the people that do not believe breed standards are necessary.  Unless the GSD community comes together and commits to holding to breed standards, all that will be left will be "AKC" GSD's.  Except for the few that believe....

AKC is a dog registry period. It's up to each breed to establish its own club to mentor breeders and try to help them understand how to breed good dogs.  In this breed it is the GSDCA.

How do you expect AKC to legally tell the dog world which dogs they can or cannot breed.  Be careful what  you wish for. In Germany there are GSD's still being bred that are not eligible for registration with the SV but they are registered with other organizations. The SV says if you want to breed a litter that is eligible for SV registration, then these are the rules. AKC has no such rules because they register all breeds, not just one while the SV is only concerned about the GSD. Quite a different set of cirsumstances and not apples to apples by any stretch. If AKC were to set breeding rules for every breed they register, how could they ever find enough breed wardens, etc to administer such a program.  How would they be selected? Would we want the AKC telling us which of our dogs are qualified for breeding and which not?

It's easy to blame AKC for all the bad dogs we see today, but in reality it goes way beyond that. It's the breeders who are causing the damage.  Look at the ads on this board.

Breeding dogs will always depend on 2 things, the knowledge and the integrity of those breeding them. Everything else doesn't really matter.

Does anyone think it is worthwhile to try to follow Sch. USA's registration policy?  Should we be encouraging others to get their pups from those litters?
