Hello all! I have been looking for the right German Shepherd pup for quite a few months now while trying to decide exactly what I wanted. I have decided on a male and I am also researching into Schutzhund or Protections training (only to give the dog a "hobby" I guess). This will be a family pet first and foremost. While I know that the dogs personality and genes are the most important, I also have a strong desire for the color/look for my boy! So that being said, below is a picture of CJ, a Leerburg stud. Ed Frawley is no longer breeding, but that is exactly the look I want - mostly black with a tiny bit of tan! So my question to the board is, when looking for the right breeders should I be looking at parents that are all black or black and tans? For those that are waiting on the chance to jump all over me, I'm not JUST looking at colors!!! I'll be thoroughly researching everything else genetic and personality wise, but the color may be the final box to check! All help greatly appreciated!

The color you are looking for is called "bi-color". You are looking for "working line" pup, if you are interested in doing SchH or Personal Protection I would certainly buy a pup from titled parents. Generally you should be looking at parents who are either bi-colors themselves, sable's, black and tan's or Solid blacks...these are the color's of "working lines". A breeder will be able to tell you if they have a bi-color pup.
Good luck!

I knew that was Ed's dog by the flowers in the backround. He's the only person I know (picturewise) who has bleeding hearts beside hosta's.

Good luck in your search. Finding the right pup can be a challenge and much fun at the same time. I am partial to the bi-colors myself. GSDfan had great advice. If you are looking to work your dog in either Schutzhund or PP, look for parents with working titles themselves. It will increase your chances of getting a pup that works, not a full gaurantee your pup will be the same but it helps. Also look for hip and elbow certifications, not pre-lims. Either SV "a" stamped or OFA certified. Find out what at least 2 or 3 generations back hips and elbows were like, again not a gaurantee but it increases your cahnces of the pups being okay. Most important, have fun with whatever pup you get.

Jackie that is a gorgeous looking dog!! My problem with buying from Haus Juris is that their puppies cost around $3,000 I believe. They may very well be worth it!! I just know of great kennels like Leerburg and many others that don't go over $2,000, so I can't justify spending that much!

We will (hopefully, god willing) expect a litter out of our V-Chuckie vom Schloss Laer, SchH3 FH1 KKL1a normal hips and elbows www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/400203.html and V-Paska vom Salztalblick, SchH3 FH1 KKL1a normal www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/126254.html. Litter will be linebred on Arek Stoffelblick 4-5.
Since both parents are black, there will be no bi-colors. But maybe you like black dogs as well. We are just outside of Washington DC in Maryland. Chuckie is in heat right now and should be bred any day soon. If she is expecting, she will come over from Germany in about a month.

Since we are talking about colors here. How does a dog produce a solid black pup? I know that it has to be a recessive on a parent, but does it have to be a recessive on both?
For example: My bitch's father was a solid black and her mother was a sable. Just wondering what color she would produce, say being bred to a sable male. Would he also have to have a parent that was solid black to produce a solid black pup?
Thanks!
