Ooooops accidently put my question in the wrong place.

I have a Ghandi von Arlett granddaughter that has a very plush black and red ooat. She was fuzzy behind her ears, but as she gets older, (now 13 months) she has lost most of that fuzziness. She has shed her winter coat. I need to know if I should show her for a rating. I showed her at 3 months and she got a  VP  but toward the end of the line. I was told she was a long hair. I would be happy to send a pix to anyone that can help give me a definative answer. Help!

can't give you any answer without a picture.  Chances are if she was shown in a conformation show and got a VP she is not coated.

You can send a cheek swab for testing that will tell you if she is a coat or if she carriers the gene recessively. If you want more information, I'll post it here.

If you have a ghandi granddaughter she is a carrier.

If that link doesn't work for  you, try this:

http://www.vetdnacenter.com

Click on the the top banner "canine", then "inherited canine traits", then the icon with the photo of the Corgi.  It's an interesting site  that also gives you a punnit square break down of the odds of getting longcoats from carriers, stock hairs, and longcoats.

A Ghandi g-daughter will not necessarily be a carrier depending on the rest of her pedigree. If he was a carrier, then she would have a 25% chance of carrying that gene and you'd also have to factor in the status of all the other relatives. However, if she has/had tufts behind and inside her ears and longer feathering on her tail, front legs, and britches, she probably is a recessive carrier. The longcoat gene only tell you if the dog IS a longcoat or a carrier, it will not tell you how long the coats will be. That is up to the modifiers. As we all know, there are coats and there are coats, some with longer guardhairs and/or more undercoat than others. Genetically a coat is a coat; phenotypically, a dog that tests positive as a coat might look almost like a stock hair. Ain't breeding dog fun ?

So I was right with Ghandi being borderline coated...

look at thsi picture of him...

I was just  told by a wellknown breeder during the local Landesgruppen show held this weekend... to keep my now... 8 month old pup until a year of age... seems like his coat is about to shed and very few traces of the longhair tufts can now be found... some hairs on the cheek... thats why his ear shape is now well defined... I was told he may be PLUSH afterall like Ghandi...

have a nice day/..

It would be interesting to know, if Ghandi were DNA tested, would he come back as a coat himself or as a recessive carrier. Any guesses?  Would "plushes" DNA test as carriers or coats?
