Kalibeck

tail kali 002.jpg These are pictures of my girl Kali's tail. She had a sebaceous cyst that would flare up, rupture, & fade away where this sore is, but when I was grooming her yesterday, her fur was all embedded in this horn-like knot, & just lifted up to reveal this. I did call my vet, but can't get her in til next week. I clipped the cruddy hair away & cleaned it up, but I don't want her to lick it, as I am applying antibiotic ointment. Any suggestions? I know she's going to need systemic antibiotics....but thankfully no fever, she's eating & acting very bright & happy. I just need help on how to keep her from damaging herself further until she's seen. I'm thinking ....inflatable cone? Thank you so much! jackie harris

Bucket time!

Our dog has allergies that flare up every now and then, and he chews himself. We get this Anti-lick spray at Petco that deters him from chewing. It takes away the itch and that along with the bucket helps immensely while we wait to get him into the vet.

Hi,
I would use betadine instead of a greasy ointment.

Hi Jackie:

Just sent you a pm.  From the picture it looks like the cyst was at the top of her tail - correct?  Libby's was 1/2 down her tail.  Definately cone time as Libby did serious damage to her tail.  2 surgeries and about 12 weeks to heal.

Libby's required antibiotic ointment, guaze and vet wrap, but didn't realize when I pm'd you that her cyst was so high up, so vet wrap may not be an option.

This is a picture of Libby with her partially amputed tail.  I am really glad that after the fur grew in that it does not look too bad.  I would have been upset if she lost the entire tail.

Awww-------she's beautiful! Yes, Kali's are at the base of her tail to about 1/3rd of the way down, if she needed an amputation it would be completely off, like a Rottie. I'd be heartbroken for her, her tail is her flag of glory. But we'd love her anyway! I'm hoping we can fight this conservatively!
So far she is not abusing herself, her tail is still covered with the ointment I put on it earlier.
And yes, it is being cleansed with a peroxide solution, blotted with Betadine, cleansed again & then ointment applied. I hate to cone her, but I guess it's the only way.....thanks! jackie harris

There's a sebaceous gland called a supra-caudal gland which is located near the base of the tail that sometimes becomes over-active and/or infected and then called supracaudal hyperplasia, gets very itchy and it erupts and looks like the cyst on your dog.  I don't think by the positioning of the cyst on your dog that the supra-caudal gland is to blame.

My GSD has had this become over-active a few times and all I have done is wash it with Hibiscrub and spray Dermacool on it, once dried up I apply Fuciderm and it clears up. A friend of mine had to have the tail fully amputated last year as this gland kept flaring up, regardless of intensive treatment her GSD had. I do believe you can have the gland removed only.

Rather than a cone - use a Comfy Collar, a much better option than an Elizabethan collar.

You can see in the pic below the area which my dog has chewed in the past not long after it having a flare-up and the hair growing back through.

Do the comfy collars work? I almost bought one yesterday, but I couldn't see how it would keep her from her tail....?

So far she's doing pretty well. No chewing, no excessive licking. She's pretty much ignoring it, thank goodness. And the silly girl comes up to me & flips around, so I can check it, before I even ask. She's a special girl, & this is really her first health issue, at, let's see now....at 7 years old! Her birthday was April 10th, I believe. Thanks for all your advise! jackie harrisKali says Thank you, too!

@Jackie- I used a Comfy Cone after Senta was spayed (she ripped the cheap plastic one off and shredded it). The Comfy Cone made her less miserable (more comfortable for her to sleep in) and kept her from licking her stitches. It also doesn't hurt when you get hit in the back of the knees! The Cone is expensive but lasts (I've loaned mine out to a few friends).

Here's a photo (low quality since it's off my FB account):
