That looks very promising. Thanks for posting it.

Yes, thanks. My Otto died from DM last year, and it is a very cruel disease (although he handled it a lot better than I did). I really hope something comes of the research.

Well, hopefully stem cell research for dogs won't be as controversial!
Luckily I live in a state where there is a lot of stem cell research on the state level.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if this paves the way to a cure for DM?

by Rezkat5 on 11 July 2007 - 01:07
yes it would.

It sure would, and looks so promising.

The AKC Canine Health Foundation is the mover and shaker of the AKC dog world. They have stepped up to the plate and are addressing some serious health issues found in all breeds. IMO this is the best thing AKC has ever done for the dogs. 10 years ago, who would have thought that there would be DNA identification and typing and stem cell research directed to improving the health of dogs everywhere? The CHF does not spend money on cosmetic issues like identifiying carriers of the longcoat gene, they leave that up to private research. Their efforts are directed toward the life threatening diseases many of our dogs will face in their lifetime. Thankfully, I've not had a GSD with DM, but know some who have and their sorrow is just overwhelming. This could be the light at the end of the tunnel.

Blitzen:
Thanks for the article. I have forwarded to a friend who has an 7 year old male gsd with dm. He was diagnosed a few years ago and she is doing everything possible to keep him active and healthy. She has had him on various medications/pain, etc and swims him several times a week. When he is in the pool, you would never guess he has dm. She swears that swimming is what has kept him going for so long. She is going to take the article to her vet to try and find out if there are any studies like that in the works on the east coast. She would love to get him into one.
