My mom's springer spaniel has mild dysplasia in one hip. He is now 13 and having trouble with stairs. Up until now, he's been fine. But he's just a pet, and has never done trials or competitions.

my very first GSD had HD. He never showed any signs of it, and he lived up to 10 years old. I had to put him down, not due to the HD, but because he had blown a disk in the back of his neck some how. It got to the point where he couldn't walk anymore and the surgery wasn't guaranteed. He had no sings of HD through out his life. I think it would depend on if it's fair, mild or extreme.

my 2nd german shepherd had severe hd in both hips, lived in the family room and kitchen downstairs because she could not come up stairs she lived a veryhappy life, she was our cd obedience assistant for over 10 years, she lived to the ripe old age of 17, and only went to the vet for the initial diagnosis when she was 15 months old

Our family dog when I was growing up was a female GSD with HD. She was the best dog I think I've EVER had and showed absolutely no signs of problems until she was about 12 yrs old....and that was only getting up slowly like an old person would do. She didn't jump or compete in any trials...just kept up with all of us kids and our friends.
Also...I had a female that showed severe HD when I took her to be OFA'd. Shocked the hell out of me because she moved so well. After second opinion confirmed the diagnosis, I had her spayed and found her a working pet home where she herds the cattle. She's been there for 2 yrs and is still working every day with no signs whatsoever.
My sister has a GSD mix with HD. He had difficulty with stairs etc, and she started supplementing with glucosomine. Takes a couple weeks to see results, but the dog runs up to bed every night now at age 9!
Hope our experiences help. Wishing you all the best.

Does the dog have arthritic change(Shaping, etc)? I would reccomend another xray by a different vet if there is no shaping or arthritic change.

alot depends on the age when it starts the younger is much worse. some dogs get it and progress into severe hD very quickly while others tend to progress very slowly. good luck with your dog

Bunbun, the very first dog I ever bought to show and breed turned out to be dysplastic in one hip. I was worried sick thinking she'd have to be put down due to pain. I couldn't have been more wrong. She lived to be 12+ and never took a lame step in her life. I've had other dogs with severe to moderate HD and they did fine too. You just have to use some common sense and limit his exercise if he limps. One of my worst was a young male, severe in both hips and very lame at 8 months. I kept him crated, limited his exercise and kept his weight down. A few months later he stopped limping and I placed him in a home. The only problem they ever had with him was he jumped their 6 foot fence. As DR said each dog is different, but a little common sense will go a long way. You may also want to consider a glucosimine and chondroitin supplement, Cosequin is the best known brand name.
Having another xray might not be a bad idea if he is only mildy dysplastic in one hip and not showing any signs of degenerative joint disease.

good recommendation..had a friend with a daushaund that had hd at about 12 and could hardly walk, cut a few pounds off this dog and gave the glucosimine and chondroitin supplement and he is almost like a pup and is over 15 years old plus no longer limps around.
My female gsd is almost 8 and even though she is still moving perfectly and had ofA good hips i have put her on the same supplements.
