Hello All, just curious if two light grey sables Sire and Dam can produce a dark "black"sable puppy.
by TingiesandTails on 15 April 2011 - 22:04
depends on the grand and great-grandparents genes....

Thank you, Sire and Dam have both Dark and Light sable and bi-color in their genes. Just reading other posts it seems two sable parents will produce only sable(not sure if I understood that right I am a newbie getting a puppy in approx eight weeks). I was just wondering if there is a possibility of having dark and light sables.

I have a light sable bitch and breed her to a dark sable male and they had 3 dark sables 2 light sables and 2 bi blacks
The bitch carries the black gene as well as the longcoat gene as the female bi black is a long coat:)

i have sables and breed like that sometimes. i get sable and a couple blacks. never a bi-color.
if bothh parents has the black gene, then it is possible for blacks.
breed black to sable and you will get bis' and sable. if bthe female carries yhe black gene you might get a black breed black to black and you will get all black.

In my boy's litter--his mom was a more grey sable and his dad was a sable about the color of my boy--there were bi's and sables. We recently bred a litter--dad was black sable, mom was black and got black sables and blacks.

it takes a sable parent to produce sables, but that sable parent can produce all colours that are in the GSD colour spectrum.
