Does anyone have any info or experience breeding GSD at altitude 9,000'?  Previous proven litters bread at 5,000' are now very small numbers 2 pups where before 7-9.  Also with 4 pups, 2 are still born and 1 fades after 24 hours.  Been told this is all due to altitude.  Any feedback appreciated.  Thanks

The Swiss do it with little or no problem that I have seen....and those mountains are really high up there.

I guess it also depends on how long the bitch has been up there...like humans I imagine there is a period of getting used to the altitude and the thinnes of the air.

I do not think this is to do with altitude, we are in the Andes at about 2,800m and although my own females have tended to have quite small litters (up to 5) others around here commonly have 7 or 8 and I have heard of a few litters of 11-13 and I do not think we have more than normal numbers of still born or fading puppies. Cate is correct, it could possibly affect a female immediately after arriving at altitude having been accustomed to sea level, but after a short adaptation period all should be normal. I believe that male fertility can be affected by altitude, but again only initially.
