What would you all pay for a 6 month old pup from workingline parent with good hips and at least a ring 1, schH 1, or tracking title. It would be cool if you could break it down into pet, or breeding quality, and or show or working line.

I wouldn't pay more than $1000 for a dog no matter what titles the parents had or how great the lineage was. I mean just as a matter of comparison, I can get a great quarter horse or thoroughbred for $600 and they live 30 years, no way I'd ever spend over a grand for a dog, nothing on earth could justify that in my eyes. And what exactly is a "pet quality" working lines pup? I get the strata of show quality versus pet: a soft ear, undesended testi, etc...what would render a working lines dog a pet?

A working line pet is a dog that doesnt have the temperment for work. He doesnt have the prey drive, or the trainability for work, or some other reason that he cannot work at an acceptable level.

Thanks for the definition. So these dogs lack the high drive and they are more content being couch potatos ore tennis ball chasers? I wonder how often these type of pups pop up in a working line litter?

I would say that a pup worth can only be determined by the person who will purchase said pup. I see show dogs listed at 3000 an dwould not pay 300 for a show dog, but I breed and am partial to working dogs. I have paid as much as 3000 for a good female working puppy, but titled her in sch and bred her 5 times producing 48 pups which i sold at 1200-2500 a piece so that was obviously worth it. I would say that its all up to you. I would be weary of buying a 6 month old pup though, why was it not sold with the rest of the litter? was it returned? I would ask alt more questions before I would shell out any money for any dog.  Greg

That is my problem, I can only bring in a dog that is 6 months or older because that is the law here in the bahamas. I want to buy another dog sometime soon and prefer to bring the dog in from the states, so I just want to know what is a reasonable price to pay.

I'm amazed that GoldenElk can get a decent horse for $600.

I'm equally amazed that some people now-days assume that working line litter automatically translates into "super drives" etc.  Working line litters often have pups that are great pets with only a select few that are truly suited for sport or SAR etc.  This is true today, just as it has always been true.

I don't have a good feel for the current fair price for a six month old.  If the breeder spent the time training and socializing like they should have I would expect to pay about 130% of the breeders puppy price.  So, if the 8 week old pups are $1200 I would expect to pay $1500 - $1600.  This is a big IF.  IF I trust and can see that the breeder put in the time socializing and training.  If the dog was left in the kennel as a left over pup that no one wanted then it may be worthless.

I assume that you meant that the parents have the titles, not the 6 month old?

Yes, you have it right

Okay, so what about purchasing a pup from the litter, and paying for the breeder to raise the pup to 6 months. Say the pup cost $800, how much would you charge for keeping him until he is 6 months old
