Hey All,

My pup from puppy from Belgium will be arriving about July 5th and I was wondering if I will have to home quarantine him. My husband was given a dog from Germany this week and we were told that we can't take him ANYWHERE AT ALL for 30 days and if we did we'd get in trouble. They said they were going to send someone out from the SPCA to check and make sure he was at our house. I was pretty upset >:-( since we like to take our pups out after their second set of shots, so we can start socializing them and getting them used to car rides. Even just short trips to the convenience store or up the street to check the mail.

I wasnt sure if it was just pups from Germany or any country outside the USA as we had never imported a dog before.

Thanks In Advance!

Stacy

Where do you live?

I know that my male couldn't be shipped right away until he had his rabies shot.  Then had to wait for few days after he got that to have him shipped.  I didn't have any rules or regulations regarding taking him anywhere.

Maybe some of the others would know more about shipping younger pups.  My boy was 4 1/2 months old when I got him.

My girl came home last week from Holland at just under 10 weeks - she has to remain quarantined until 30 days after her rabies shot (which is in three weeks)...The way the customs officer explained Quarantine to me was that I just basically need to keep her away from other dogs - kind of confined to the neighborhood.  The guy didnt say anything about the SPCA though - I just had to sign something...he was really pleasant about it...Ruby came into Washington-Dulles Int. which right now is kind of scary high security because of its location - but overall it wasnt a whole lot of hassle (except for time).

She was my first import to - lol - be prepared to spend alot of time in the customs and cargo area...I was there almost three hours and my girl's plane landed early.

Wow, I guess it's a lot longer post 9-11.  I remember waiting an hour or so once the plane landed.  And that was at Newark Airport.

TexasLady217:

I imported 2 pups from Belgium.  They were about 12/13 weeks old.  (This was a little over a year ago)  We did not have any restrictions, so not sure if importing from Germany is different.  Were you told by Customs that you had to quarantine your pup?  Just wondering who gave you that restriction?

Imported pups who are not old enough to have a rabies shot are suppose to be quarentined at your home until 30 after they have their rabies vaccination.  When my female came from Belgium 2 years ago, animal control did come to make sure she was at my house.  You are suppose to keep them home - whether you do or not is up to you!  You can check out the USDA website for more info!

I hate, hate, hate Newark :p  I always get stuck there when I am flying, coming back from Holland I was stuck there for 9 hours - and I was soooooo happy that I didnt fly with my girl as Cargo on the flight with me....my girl came directly here on KLM instead of Continental.

I think they are a little more strict now - thats for sure...Dulles is so close to Washington that they get all wiggy about things like that...but at least the people were nice :)  It would probably be a little better at other airports though.

One of my pups flew into Dulles and one into Philadelphia.  Maybe becuase my pups were  a little older - we did not get the restrictions.

Here's the link to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control animal quarantine requirements.  Be sure to download and read the "Confinement Agreement" form, which contains specific information about what quarantine actually means: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dq/animal.htm

The dog your husband was given does not have to be quarantined at all if the dog's rabies vaccination is current and the vaccination was given at least thirty days before arrival in the U.S.
