The "Puppy Mill" often evokes horrific mental images of waste filled cages, dogs stacked like boxes at a warehouse, disease, and even death. But not all Puppy Mills are what we see in the media: some appear quite clean and even lovely. But puppy mills all have the same thing in common: the desire for PROFIT. |

John thank you for posting that. It was heartbreaking. I doubt very much RTT kennel operates like that.

I'm sure RTT is very clean and the dogs well taken care of, I never said otherwise. My deffinition of a puppy mill is somebody breeding just because they can with no regard for the breed standard. It doesn't matter if they have one or a dozen. The fact that these have the legendary RTT back multiple generations is the only selling point for pretty hefty sums of money. The dogs shown are not per standard and the OFA/OVA listings are difficult to follow. No titles in any way shape or form. People around here have flipped out over "high priced, who would ever pay so much" puppies being advertised, out of titled and breed surveyed parents, for much much less then the RTT puppies are being advertised for. I have seen pictures and read stories of the disgusting puppy mills around, and no RTT is not one of those, again I never said they were. Many others here have stated the exact deffinition I just gave in other threads, breed with no regard for the standard and do nothing to improve, or at least not hurt, the breed. If you can't improve the breed, at least strive to not make it worse.

And people, if you noticed, I started a new thread.
Just because you make a profit, does not mean you run a puppy mill. I am not a breeder, but as any business operates, you need to have some kind of income to support the needs of your business. As high profile as RTT is, I bet you my last dollar that 100s of so-called animal rights activists are keeping a close eye on that business.
Sue, I am not attacking you on a personal level. I just believe that there are to many extreme people out there that goes to the EXTREMES on the right issues but at the wrong places. People that are involed in these such situations should NEVER be allowed to own a pet. Yes, it would be unfair to the people's kids, but at least the kids wouldn't grow up thinking that this kind of behavior is ok.
The State of Kansas has enacted a law to protect puppy mill owners by making it a felony to photograph a puppy mills and facilities.

Animules,
I agree with you on the fact that you should better the breed. If you look into it, the GSD is the highest profiled breed that strives for that. Yes, there are other breeds out there that people strive for. I haven't heard anyone mentioning the Silo Shepherd. I believe that they are nothing but a damaged breed of a gsd. It is easy to name kennels that strive for the goal of keeping the breed of gsd strong, I honestly can not name kennels that strive to make any other kind of breed stronger.

I have been biting my tongue over this "Is RTT a puppy Mill or Not" I will say I think it it is way to much money to charge $3500.00 for a puppy period. I don't care what the titles or lineage, its ridiculous. BUT I do believe that this kennel feels they are preserving a old line of dogs bred to look the way they did way back when. I think if someone wants to pay that much to be part of the history and be able to say "I have a Rin Tin Tin descendant" so be it! Its really nobody's business but the buyer and seller! The dogs are sold on spay neutor contracts. There seems to be a demand for them. So WTF!! Maybe some people should just go spend more time with their own dog and worry less about what others are doing with theirs! I found this site thru a link on another kennels page along time ago! To me it was a walk down memory lane... I thought I wouldn't want one, I wouldn't pay that kind of money for one, and left it at that.
I also don't think anyone who is breeding isn't in it for some money! Even if its just to support their own dogs and their habit to have them. Isn't that true???

Trailrider,
I agree. As I said in an early post, yes you need money to support what you are doing. If you want to better the breed, you are going to need money to buy a great prospect for breeding purposes.
If you didn't make any kind of profit, how would you pay for the kennel helpers, vet bills, food, insurance,etc...........................

Since when is desiring to make a profit a bad thing???
