What would you say about this AM boy, he is not my dog but I thaught he looked nice.

by policemom on 25 June 2007 - 22:06
I think he's beautiful. But then I think that every dog that is loved is beautiful. In fact, I think all animals are beautiful in their own way.

Looks painful standing that way. How can standing on the whole back leg to the hock be a good thing?
by Blitzen on 25 June 2007 - 23:06
There are plenty of German showlines on this board that look the same and worse, Animules. Maybe it's the way they are set up for the photo?

Blitzen, Am show lines or German show lines, I can't understand how standing on the leg up to the hock is a good thing. Of course I like those "ugly" working lines that stand on their feet, not hocks. I do like his color though.

Yeah, does anyone know why GSD's are stacked like that? It seems like all the other breeds (herding &working) are stacked square.

I'm starting to have a lot more appreciation for workinglines than I had at one time. I prefer a dog that actually looks like he/she could tend sheep 24-7 and/or bring down the bad guy. Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder; to me workinglines look almost primitive and quite rugged. I find most of them very attractive.

I read somewhere that GSD's are stacked that way in order to emphasis their sloping backlines and rear angulation. True or false? Beats me .

I thought they stood that way because.... If you watch your dog and something catches his eye and stops him midstride, He stops much like the "Stack" in a natural way. but beats me too, LOL

You know what Blitzen, I feel the same about German showlines. For the longest time, I was horrified by the showlines because I was parroting what I heard some of my fellow working lines people say. Not too long ago, one of the most respected working line trainers took the time to explain to me the error or my ways, & taught me to have respect for what the good German Showline breeders do. Now I know both types have their place in the breed. We working dog types will always make sure the showline breeders keep an eye on the work & the showline breeders will make sure we don't forget we want GSD's not Malis!! We are both shepherds of the breed.
