OK, if someone was going to breed basically for show line or obedience work, why would you want to do a breed survey?????  Still learning here, but I know a lot of you won't be kind about this.  Just taking a chance, LOL.......

I sense some serious issues here...???? My answer would be to make sure that you are improving the breed, to find out what lines would compliment hers, to make sure that she does not have a/some serious flaws that you may not have picked up on that should not be passed along...I will add my own 'dumb' question here....(& brace myself!), mine's a hypothetical, though.....if you have a dog with major talent or wonderful attributes, but has one flaw....would you breed to preserve the 'special' attributes to another dog that would balance the flaw???? Just wondering.....jackie osborne   BTW-I was always told that the only dumb question is the one you don't ask.......jmho....

No need for anyone to bash. KKL is desired, but NOT required, not even in Germany. The KKL is a quick way of knowing that the dog has fulfilled all breeding requirements and has been found either suitable or recommended for breeding. The KKL report gives you a quick overview of what the dog you are considering for breeding or a puppy out of is all about, though it is pretty cursory. Still, if you cannot see the dog in person, the report adds a bit more info to the pix you are looking at. In addition to that the KKL event itself is a convenient way to see a lot of breed worthy dogs in one place, at least in Germany. Not really enough KKLs being offered in the US where a lot of imported dogs do not get the KKL for life, which is needed after the initial KKL, which expires after two years if the dog is not presented again. So in short, its nice to have but not an absolute neccessity. Unless you breed show line dogs and hope to produce that VA puppy one day, because for a dog to VA its parents have to be breed surveyed.

I  never thought about it that way!  Thanks : - }  And yes, I was being serious when I asked the question.  I just knew that I would get bashed for it, because I asked it, lol.  I can still feel it coming!  In crash position as they stated, lol.

That certainly makes sense Kalibeck.  Not everyone is knowledgeable enough to recognize ALL the potential flaws that could be passed on.  Thank you for pointing that out.  And I'm sure SW appreciates the courteous and intelligent answers so far received.  I know I do.

"if you have a dog with major talent or wonderful attributes, but has one flaw....would you breed to preserve the 'special' attributes to another dog that would balance the flaw???? "

Kalibeck, I would say yes to that.. I am a working dog person and my competition female is a super little thing, she's a rocket, her obedience is excellent..... get lots of compliments on her bitework..... she has 2 missing P2's so is not eligible for breed survey, which I had intended to do with her like we do with all our others. However, that is something that although is very important is also pretty easy to take care of and in the grand scheme of things does not make her less of a dog .. it doesn't prevent her from doing any of the work and is one thing we can work on fixing. She is worth breeding for all of her other attributes.... hips and elbows are good, she is very social and stable, yet bites like an alligator, is extremely athletic and correct size.....  So, yes I think there are circumstances that you have to work around..not smart to throw the baby out with the bath water as they say.....you have to look at the whole dog and the impact that the fault will have for the future...... There is no perfect dog so we have to work with the best that we have......

As a matter of fact I am breeding her to a KKL1 V rated working dog with KKL1 all thru his pedigree so we should really take care of the P2 thing in the next 2 or 3 generations or so providing any of her progeny are also bred that way or even bred at all!!

Hope this helps...

Denise
