Is this dog black or Bi black? http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/489241.html

How many think this is black and red or bi color? http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/487512.html

First dog is black...

Second dog is bi-color, although can't see the belly, could be a blanket back...

I would have to say they are both BI black due to there is color on the legs of the first one (back) and color on the face of the second one.

A true black has no white hairs or color hairs on the face, chest, legs, or in between the toes (Many miss that one)

a true Bo-black face has only color on the cheeks. No eye brows. Throat, legs butt, stomach can have color

First dog is black, solid blacks can have some white hair on them and tan between their toes. The second dog is melanistic black and tan(more black than tan, not quite bi-color). Bi-colors always have tar heels and pencil striping on their toes. Below is a true bi-color pup and a link to a adult bi-color.

Interesting.  I would call the first dog black, even though there are a few tan hairs.  Perhaps I'm off-base on this.

My take on the second dog is that it's a dark B&T because it's got too much tan on the legs and such.

Does anyone know if there is a genetic test available for color genes?  I was surprised and pleased to see a test for the long coat gene.  Would be interesting to know what a dog brings to the table before breeding.

On first glance the first dog is black, but there are some tan patches, so although he is probably registered as black.. he is really bi.. the brn/tan probably showed up later

Second dog is blk/red or blk/tan.. already has way too much tan to call him a bi color. there are way too many dogs on this data base advertised as bi-color who are truly blk/tan

Esco and his sister Kiva (who I co-own) would be considered by some to be bi-color by others to be blk/tan with an extended black saddle..All I really care about is that they have good pigment and produce the same!!
