Hello, I'm in Australia and haven't found an answer to my big boy's problem and now see that Tyke & Matt may have found a solution for Dargo. He's nearly 11 and pretty fit for his age, I think. However, over the last few years this awful problem recurs no matter what I try - the last straw was the science diet: overnight (last night) it tipped the scales and I was back to hosing down the back yard this morning.
I'm going to try the yoghurt; I've lately figured for myself that rice is not doing him any favours, nor is a vege component in his meal. What did seem to help was canned tuna, but I'd need to feed him a truck load each meal.
Dargo is a happy, lively 47 kilo dog with a great temperament so I'm going to try everything I can for him. Three & a half years ago he lost his tail to cancer, developed hyopothyroidsim and arthritis all at (what seemed to be) the same time.
If good old plain yoghurt works, you'll hear me yell from over there!
cheers, Darry

Have you tried using some canned pumpkin and rice when he has loose stools?
I don't know what kind of dog food is available in your area but maybe you could try looking into a high quality limited ingredient diet (one source of protien..etc).

loose stools can be a thyroid problem - you may want to have his T3 and T4 checked again- they may need to adjust the dose of thyroid medication.  Also, metronizol is wonderful.  Get it from the vet.  I know many older dogs that have had health trauma are put on it and do wonderful - takes care of the loose stools in 12 hours.  Then start home cooking for him.  Good luck to the old boy.

Pumpkin is great for diarrhea, but watch the amount as it can have the reverse reaction as well. I agree about a re check of the Thyroid. Has he been dewormed recently? that is a possibility as well. Make sure they check for whipworms, as they are tricky to recognize and need a different worming medication than the rest. If you can find Panacur-C that is a great dewormer and also will treat whipworms, it is given for 3 days, it may require different sized packets as they are based on weight. It may be worth a shot! Have you had him tested for Giardia? You could also try a digestive aid, such as Nupro, or Prozyme. Good luck, and I hope your boy is feeling better soon!
