A lady was killed by her dogs 2 days ago. She was known as a good hearted lady who took dogs in that others didn't want. There where 14 dogs on the property and 11 got put down. She was found by her son, but died waiting for the ambulance. The dogs where x breeds, mastiffs, greyhound and others, none being german shepherds.

This is why back yard breeders should be stopped breeding mongrel dogs.

I live in the country of South Australia and I know people just like this old lady, some even getting to 81 yrs old. Who have taken in the unwanted animals that people dump. They try to rehouse them but only a few get a new home. I can name 5 people off hand. Trying to fix what people crate.

I believe there are too many x breeds that shouldn't be breed and a licence to breed might help stop unwanted dogs. I spent years working in animal shelters and see the waste and we crate it, we should help stop it.

I used to be one of thoughts people that had many dogs picked up off the street and until you see what  is going on I don't think you can say anything against what I have said. Otherwise put it to the test and open your door to see how sad it really is

Now there is one less who cares

It's very sad what happened to her.

However, I do not agree with the license to breed dogs. That's an on going topic here.  The only ones it will affect are the people trying to do the right thing anyway.  The ones creating and dumping the mixed dogs you talk about will not pay any attention but keep doing what they are doing.

just geting a breeders lic will not stop the throw away/disposalable dogs.

Making the owners take a training class with their dog, Mandatory, or the state gives the dog back to the breeder

Breeders have to take back their dogs that were breed by them, let them fix the issues the buyer created with the dog and then rehome

I agree, with animules,,, no license to breed dogs...that will put those of us out of business that breed carefully and already spend thousands of dollars a year out of that money we do bring in, to keep the breed pure and healthy, and support and pay fees to USA SCHUtz , REG OUT PUPS,., AND IF  you let the government or state get involved its all about money in their pockets...the puppy mills will go on and never get stopped....You cant stop a truck full of pups at Canton Flea mkt...by the time the law gets there, they have sold enough to pack up andmove on.   and  you would be surprised at the number of people who say  OH I dont care about papers...and they dont care where the dog comes from either.....Here in Texas today they announced that garage sales are now being lilcensed and you have to pay sales tax to the city you live in and can only hold each sale for three days......Hey guy, we  are headed to communistic control by the government....

Hey Rose -  Garage sale ordinances and licensing have been alive and well for a very very long time in most Texas cities.  They are actually aimed at keeping an individual from running a flea market every weekend out of their garage in a residential area, which can be a real pain in the a--  for the other residents in the area.

I agree that licensing will only penalize the good breeders who put ALL their money into the dogs in the first place, with proper care, showing, working, etc.... the puppy millers who just crank out the numbers will really PROFIT from this move if it puts the reputable breeders out of business.

Again, I say, educate, not legislate, that is the answer to the problem.  There are more "innocent" contributors to the problem than "deliberate" contributors to the problem. No one here seems to think of the consumer, who drives the whole economy. The consumer is NOT the breeder who has an agenda, be it noble or not. But one has to believe that the human race is based more on altruistic motives than selfish ones for this to work.

It breaks my heart to hear of an elderly lady losing her life in such a vicious way, but I would bet she didn't blame the dogs, only their previous owners.

The licence doesn't have to cost, though the ones doing wrong can be prostcuted and barred from doing it again, even jailed. They don't need to make money out of the people doing the right thing because there will be out of the ones doing the wrong. People can't advertise incase an inspector comes to see your licence, no selling to pet shops if no number. It doesn't have to be over board just enough to protect the good people.

We are paying for the people that are doing the wrong thing now .  Dog registrations go up to stop people breeding unwanted dogs, we pay for that because we are reponcible dog owners and they don't pay theirs. They might get a fined or told to reg the dog. It hasn't stopped the large number of unwanted dogs..

Or if you want a dog you by law have to train it at a school or be passed by a school to be allowed. I like litter licence, because I know people that have trained their dogs to their standard, are not a problem to anyone but couldn't go and do training due to illnesses and other.

I have a licence to keep native birds, little cost to me, little time spent doing paperwork and our native birds don't suffer as much anymore because the penalty is greater. The same can be done with dogs, to stop the suffering, one licence all needed no matter how many dogs get breed. Record how many you breed, what you breed and who it went to, microchipped. That isn't hard but enough to wipe out dogs being destroyed in the millions all over the world every year. I didn't always have this view but the problem is because of careless breeders a lot of dogs suffer and end up in shelters just to be destroyed, at no fault of their own.

beetree,  Good point no argument here on that education is the key...  However god forbid someone steps up to take that role on,  they're be called SELF Indulgent, Self Richeous, Self gratifying,  and whatever else a few can come up with.  So I ask you this....

WHO is going to be willing to step up and do this EDUCATING ??
