Twenty five years ago it was only $50 ;-) Now I understand why breeders don't spay/neuter dogs before selling. Who could afford it?

OMG! Where do you live? I don't think its that much here yet.

I live in North East Wisconsin. Called the vet this morning and that's the price they quoted me.

Hey, that's nothing! It cost me $314.00 plus taxes to have my male rescue neutered, and that didn't include the extra $189 for x-rays of his abdomen (he had an enlarged prostate, so they were checking for stones in the bladder, and possible cancer) and hips and $33 for an antibiotic injection! (His hips are good, BTW, though I'm not going to bother with OFA, as he's not registered. I just wanted to know he was functionally sound.)
Then, I had to take him back because he was licking too much, and in pain, and there were extra charges for medication and a doggie diaper! (I tried an e-collar, but it freaked him out too much.)
And this is one of the less expensive vet clinics in town. The priciest one quoted me $500 for the same surgery, plus hip x-ray!
Be glad you don't live in Canada, near a large urban centre!
Prices are cheaper in rural areas, of course, but I'll be damned if I'm going to travel about an hour away just to save some money. This clinic is good, hasn't tried to screw me with unnecessary charges the way some have, so I just 'suck it up' and hope both my kids don't ever get sick at the same time!

Most vets set the price by the size of the dog so if this is a 2+ year old the price will be a lot more than a puppy or 6 month old. That price seems a little high so you might want to try another vet if available.

When I worked for a vet back in the 70's, it was $75.00 for an immature spay, regardless of the size of the dog. If the dog had had pups, it went up to $110.00.

The female weighs 60 lbs and will be 2 next month. Never had any pups. Should have checked on the price before offering to pay the cost.

another factor that influences price is whether the surgery is done with scalpel or with laser. laser is typically higher cost; benefit is supposed to be less bleeding as cauterization occurs during the cutting. included in the quote may also have been testing for anesthesia sensitivity. ask for a detailed quote to understand the costs.

Don't tell my vet that!! She's usually on the cheaper side for a spay with laser. Last I was quoted for and older female was $165.00 and another $15 for antibiotics. This included the pre-op bloodwork since dog was over 5.

See if there's a low cost spay/neuter place. I did my cat there for $25.00. Dogs were like $50-75.00
