I would be interested to know from other countries what the ettiquette is regarding show secretaries entering their own show. This happens quite a bit here in the UK.To me it's very bad form and open to allsorts of interpretations, especially when the secretary of the show does very well result wise.

So does this happen in germany and America ?

I took Chaos to a Specialty this past weekend.  1st one of those that we have attended.  It was mostly labs.  Only some other breeds were allowed and the GSD was one of them.  It was at a camp ground and I felt very out of place.  I was in dress pants and a short sleeved sweater, and just about everyone else was in shorts and t-shirts and other unsuitable clothing for a dog show as far as I was concerned.  The show secretary AND the chair person both competed with their labs!  Both of them won ribbon after ribbon for the labs.  What surprised me though was that a lab did not get best of show, or even reserve.  I do feel the same as you though.  They are there to run the event, not compete in it.  They were running all over the place, and it seemed to me that it was very unorganized.  I didn't have as much fun as I do other shows either.  They had their own little group and didn't socialize with others there at all.  Even when trying to talk ot people, you were ignored.  I don't think I will drive a hour and a half again to this place to show my dog again!  I wanted a picture of Chaos, my self and the judge also.  When I asked the show secretary to take one with my camera, she declined!  I asked her why I couldn't get one with my camera.  She said well, we have a professional here to take pictures!  I said hmm ok, so how much does this professional cost and what do you get.  The guy stood up and said well you get a 8 x 10 with yourself, your dog and the judge, with your dogs name at the bottom, and it cost $25.  I said well ya know what, I don't think I need a 8 x 10 picture with my dogs name at the bottom of it, I can go home and do that my self!  I think only 2 people got pictures that day and paid that!  Just thought I'd share the experience.  I do agree with you though.

Here in Australia, there are two types of shows you can enter.

One is the ANKC (all breeds) types of shows. I am not sure what happens with these, as I do not enter them very often.

The other is Specialty (SV) types of shows, run by various German Shepherd Clubs around the country. These are the shows that I enter freqently. There are no rules to stop Secretaries, or other Committee members from entering their own dogs at shows they organise. The majority of competitors do not have a problem with this. If a Committee member happens to do well at their own show, then good luck to them. They probably had the dog/dogs that deserved their placing. I still like to think that the judges we contract will judge the dogs by their merit, and not by the owner/handler.

My husband and I are Committee members of our club and have helped to organise many shows. We have dined with Judges prior to showing, and I can tell you that  the next day, our dogs did no better (sometimes worse) than we would usually expect. Committee positions are usually hard to fill, and are done so by volunteers.  Some positions require many, many hours of work outside of the usual club hours.  Stopping these peolpe from entering their own dogs would just add another reason for people to shy away from taking up these positions, and it also infers that the committee members AND the judge are not to be trusted.

I look objectively at the top placegetters at each show I attend. In the vast majority of cases, the dogs are placed where they deserve to be, not in accordance with who owns them. Occasionally, I do not agree with some of the placings, but then I am not a licenced judge.

I guess that you can interpret this situation any way you like, but this is my slant on things.

I have no problem with show secretaries entering their own dogs. That position affords no special privledges (sp?) just a heap of work. there aren't enough shows in this country. I can't see barring the hardest working member of the host club from the event, but, lucky for everybody, I am not yet Queen of the Universe, so what I think has no bearing on the rules.

The last thing I want/need right now is another King of the Universe. I'm still trying to get out from under the one I have.
