My trainer and his helpers always put the sleeve on their right arms.  I assume it is because most people are right handed and if they were to attack or have a weapon it would be in the right hand which the dog would automatically go to to disarm them.  In most training videos and pictures I see the helper with the sleeve on the left arm.  Is there a reason for one or the other or is it just personal preference?  Thanks.

I assumed the sleeve arm was the "dead" arm. The arm you do not write with. So if I am right handed I would wear the sleeve on the left arm so I can drive the dog with the stick in my right hand. Also they use the right arm to balance. Don't quote me caus eI don't work dogs but I did take a bite on a sleeve for fun once and used it on my left arm. I used my right hand at the end of the sleeve to keep the dog from pulling it away from me.

I think it's just personal preference and which arm you're most comfortable using. Switch back and forth sometimes to give some variation to the dog, I say.

Like 4pack said- I believe right handed people put it on the laft arm, and lefties put it on the right arm, for driving, the stick and such.

I have just started learning to do helper work at my club and I recently asked the same question. I am right handed and our training director suggested that I put the sleeve on my left arm because the use of the stick requires more finesse in doing helper work.

He also stated that it was very important to train dogs with the sleeves on both arms or you may wind up at a trial with an off-handed helper and the dog may not respond as well as he could.

Just to clarify, when I said "train the dogs with the sleeves on both arms" I meant to expose the dogs to a right hand sleeve sometimes and also left sometimes- not both at the same time!

"wrong, wrong, and wrong" is not helpful... in the least.   If you don't say anything but criticism with absolutely no explaination, I am most likely to think that you are simply blowing smoke.

So what if you are training a police K9 or a personal protection dog and you are not worried about trials?
