These pups are claimed to be 100% GSD from parents that are both supposedly registered-not sure with who.  They are being adopted out through a "somewhat" rescue for a small re-homing fee and no papers.  At one time, the DH seriously wanted one for their supposedly "rare" markings.  The claimed sire is a poorly bred blue and tan and the dam is a white GSD.  I have only seen pics of the sire.  The DH really wanted one of these pups a few weeks back, but after some discrepancies in the "how it happened" breeding story, and pics of the pups, I refused.  SImply because I love the breed for all the things that make it what is, and COLOR is not gonna be the deciding factor for me, when I can't be certain they these are even true GSD pups.

I decided to go with a reputable GSD breeder and am more than happy with my choice.  However, the DH is still not convinced that these pups are not true GSD's, so I would like to get a general opinion from members on this board who could better explain why they may or may not be.  To me, though they appear to have GSD in them and besides the odd coloring, they just don't look purebred.  But I would like the opinion of those that are more knowledgable about the features of the GSD so I can better explain to the DH.

These are pics of the pups.  The dark pups down further are from the same litter.  The darker pups were just advertised as sable, but they don't look at all sable to me either. I have expressed that its possible there were 2 sires to this litter.

From the same litter...

They look like they have the classic husky mask. We had a husky years ago and thats what she looked like as a pup. I will try and dig up a pic of her.

they look more like a Husky or Alaskan Malamute - not shepherds

She says that "according to AKC - this rare color pattern is referred to as a "silver sable reverse" or "reverse silver sable"??

My guess ...  Alaskan Malamute and maybe some White Shepherd mixed in ....  Go on any Malamute breeders website and look at the puppy pictures....  same exact characteristic "eyebrows" and thick muzzle .... .... I owned a Malamute .... great dog , huge, strong as hell and comedic all in one !!!! She was always in trouble .. LOL but.....  I also have had German Shepherds all my life and none of them looked like those pups.
No way that those light pups in the first pictures are PUREBRED GSD..

Looks to me like the neighbor's malamute hopped the fence. Nordic breeds are famous escape artists, after all.

WTH is a reverse sable? Must be a magical sable if neither "parent" was a sable yet managed to produce it...

Alaskan Malamute!  Besides color and markings, wider muzzle, ear set and rounded skull, not GSD.

yeh looks like a mix, i had a siberian husky, with almost the same face and color when he was a little puppy.
dont get me wrong there amazing dogs, miss him soooo much.

but not 100% shepherd for sure.
the wierd thing is the darker one of the little looks mostly shepherd.

Not that weird, a litter can have more than one sire.

Tihanna, the real telltale is you are not going to get "sables" from a blue/tan bred to a white. We have a ton of people here great with color genetics that can tell you why what isn't possible, but basically, sable is a dominant gene- one of the parents (coughmalamutecough) has to be sable for the breeding to potentially produce it. Tell your hubby that breeder is full of crap.
