Shepherd Woman

Ok, I have a question.  I don't know how many of you show your GSD's, but I have a clothing question.  I have only been showing for a very short period of time and I was told that because Chaos is black and red, to stay away from these colors with my clothing in the show ring.  They say it will take away from him, and the judges will not be able to focus on him if they can't see the total dog between them and my self.  I have been wearing light colored clothing in each show I've been in.  Do you agree with the fact that I shouldn't wear black dress pants and any thing red?  Not that I would wear red, I don't even like red, lol.  But I do love this pair of black dress pants and would really like to wear them in the ring this weekend!  Any one have suggestions on what to wear in the ring.  And be nice, men!

I would not wear black unless you are trying to distract attention from his topline when you gait him. I've never shown at UKC shows, just AKC, but I think the dress code is pretty much the same at both. I always wore skirts or dresses with pockets for the bait. Good luck with him.

Personally, I stay away from black when around my dogs as it shows up the hair so badly.

As for what the pros do (if I dare mention  AKC shows here)...at Westminister this year, in the BOB competition, two women wore black skirts. One had black stockings and shoes as well. The third wore a brown skirt. The men wore dark suits (dark blue or black.) except for one fellow who was wearing grey or beige slacks and a brown tweedy sort of jacket. (His dog placed first.)

I really don't think it matters a lot as long as you look neat and professional and are wearing shoes you can run in without falling flat on your behind. The judge is watching the dog, not you.

All the best of luck to you and Chaos!

Now see, if you show in SV type shows you can be comfortable & wear a jogging suit!!!!

I'm with ya there Sue.  It's supposed to be a dog show, not the Ms. America contest.  I'd probably trip on my own feet if I had to run around a ring a skirt and pumps.  LOL

I show in UKC, with working line dogs, and I've seen everything from shorts and a tank top or T-shirt (some with rips and holes) to really good dress clothes.  I try to wear a nice blazer (weather and environment permitting) that is a medium dusty blue, over a pair of black slacks if I'm showing sable, or lighter blue or khaki jeans if I'm showing a black.  Jeans may sound tacky, but you'd be surprised at how a nice blazer can dress up a pair of jeans (and jeans don't show dirt and hair bad).  In most cases, the judge is (or should be) looking at the dog and not you.  But, on the outside chance that a judge thinks you should respect them and their ring enough to show up in nice clothes..I think it's worth it.  As a side note, I saw a judge at one show (cannot recall his name) that had a pony tail longer than mine (somewhere south of my waistband), a ZZ-Top beard, a suit and tennis shoes.  I knew at a glance this was a guy that would think outside the box enough to put up a black dog.  And sure enough, he did!

And AKC people think jogging suits look silly in the show ring. AKC/ UKC and SV shows are nothing alike in any way including the mode of dress. BTW I don't wear pumps, SchHBabe, I wear flat shoes with  rubber soles. The handling methods are entirely different too. So as to not get my head bitten off this morning, I'll pass on getting any  more specific than that as far as the skill of AKC handlers vs that of SV handlers. Not everyone can afford to hire a team of pros to present their dogs, not all of us want to, we like to do it ourselves for fun and that's where the UKC and, for some breeds, the AKC shows come in.

Sooner or later newer posters will learn to never admit that they show at AKC or UKC shows on this database. I hope I won't be shunned due to my particiaption in AKC shows. I don't show GSD's, maybe that will redeem me.
