Hello,

I have an 18 month old female that I would like to breed in the future, she is small, 55 - 60 lbs,  I am concerned about breeding her, my male weighs approx 95 lbs, and I have another male pup that I would like to breed to her later on, but I know he will be large.  Should I be concerned by the size difference?  Has any one ever had any experience in this type of situation?  The breeder I got my male from said that he once a female that was smaller and she never could get bred.  Just curious on any info or similar cases.

Thank you,

Elizabeth

Your female will be right in the correct size range for a female GSD.  Your male is on the large side.  It is more she is not too small as he may big a bit big?

Yes I am aware she is standard, and unfortunately he is oversized, should I find a male more suitable for her?  I really just want to make sure she is safe and does not have a hard time, that is my main concern for her.

I would find a smaller male for her, at least for the first time - easier breeding and easier whelping with potentially more medium-sized puppies.

Excellent studs are plentiful, and there is no need for more large (over size) dogs. If she is a good female, consider yourself fortunate to have correct size, and breed her to the best/ most compatible males who conform to the standard. Best Wishes, Jonah

I have a male that is around 95lbs, and 26" hight...female same size as yours, she had a very nice litter of 8 no problemsl very nice pups...and no he is not overweight, he just has heavy bone.

My male is also 95 lbs very lean - he is at the top of the standard but still not oversized.  He is V KKl-1.  Very large boned.  I would not have a problem breeding him to a smaller female, but maybe not for her first breeding/litter.

I had a german judge chew me out many years ago because my smaller female Azesch was the better rep of SV standards and I had not worked her or bred her  , but took her one day at  a workshop in Houston for evaluation,,,He told me I was wasting her in my kennel and get her up to snuff and she was a perfect size , etc  He also tested her temprament , and drive and I took the lecture and bred her later to the Orthos Tiekerhook grson and My Dressa who has produced Chrissy, my girl in Schutz with Mr Ledda, and boy, does she produce nice 75 lb females and some of the males get a little bit larger, of course,,, I see a lot of really larger size dogs, which I like, if kept slimmer and that is a hard job.....

Use a big male preferably line bred on NATZ VOM STEIGERHOF.That will solve your problem.

Thank you all for all the info, I have plenty of time to find a suitable male for her.  I try to keep him on the leaner side.  She is a nice dog and I want to do right by her. I don't mind at all her size, she is a fast little girl!  LOL  Again thanks.
