Hey Guys and Gals,

Will you give me your opinion on stomach tacking for a puppy - I have a friend who has a puppy and the vet would like to tack the stomach the same time as when he is altered at 10 months (I know the altered would throw you off - because I know how some people hate that) but justified in this case.  I told him I would check it out with the people that know.  What I read there are pros and cons just like everything - it does not prevent BLOAT - just from the stomach flipping.  Thanks so much for your help.  I did not do it with any of my boys.

Police and military do it routinely. I would go ahead and do it if they are going to be in there. One less thing to worry about.

I''m sorry but I don't know what stomach tacking is.  Would you please explain.  Thank you.

Gastropexy, or stomach tacking, is when a vet "tacks" the right side of a dog's stomach to the right side of the body wall using minimally invasive surgery. It prevents the stomach from twisting if it bloats, but it does not prevent the dog from bloating. As 4pack said, the police and military routinely do this for their K9s.

so if the dog bloats, the stomach doesnt pull the spleen out right? then what happens? Doesnt the dog still have to have surgery to right the twisted intestine? just better chance of living when spleen doesnt get pull away / Is that why this is done...I never knew about this...see never to old to learn.....

I wish I'd have had this done to Blitz when he was neutered.

Rose, if the stomach can't flip on its axis, most dogs that bloat can probably be saved if caught early enough for the vet to pass a stomach tube and relieve the gas.  No major surgery is involved. When I had a bunch of dogs I kept a "bloat kit" that consisted of a stomach tube and a large bore needle just in case. Thankfully, I never needed to use it.

I know a vet tech who very highly recommends large deep chested dogs have this done. As Blitzen said, it's the flipping of the stomach that cuts off the blood flow, and causes tissue to die. If the stomach doesn't flip, no dead tissue, and the dog can usually be saved.

I just had this done to my 9 month old.  He was monorchide so I figured they were going to have to go hunting for the other testicle so why not?  It was alot more invasive than I thought it was going to  stomach tacking

this photo shows the stomach tacking incision
