Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone knew if dogs scratch and itch out of boredom. My 10 month old female is constantly scratching and biting at herself or licking her private area as if she has fleas or something. I know she doesn't. She gets baths once or twice a month and she has a flea/tick collar. I can't seem to figure out why she scratches like she does.
Does anyone have any experience or remedy? Thanks so much
Have you had her checked for allergies? Your vet can do allergy testing. Takes a bit to get the results back, but it's well worth it if you can't figure it out your self. Have you switched food on her, or shampoos? Look back on when it started and try to think if you have changed anything that might be the cause. Just a thought!
Batheing too much will dry out the skin.. also try fish oil supplements.. most dogs need them ..they are good for everything.. skin, immune sytem, gut.....
Alot of the time itching is allergy related. I have a female who itches on just about any dog food. She does great on RAW and can eat some Canidae Chicken and Rice. If your not into RAW or home made, Canidae is a good food as is California Natural. It has just 2 ingredients... Chicken (or Lamb) and Rice. This way you don't have alot of different things to try to elliminate if it is a food allergy. Also you have to give it time when going to a new food, it doesn't always clear up right away. I have read that most allergies aren't food related, all I know is whenever I had this problem and went to "real" food (not dog food) the itching went away.
Raw meat diet solves the problem the allergy testing is a joke in my opinion getthat my opinion....someone jumped all over me when I posted that a year ago....every living thing is alergic to something and if you run a testing you will always get everything from pine to nuts to grass to pollen to synthetic fiber , dog and cats.....yes some people are very sick but I suggest before y spend 2000 dollars on test you read Kevin Trudeaus book What they dont want you to know....I sold a pup to a young man who had a hot spot at 5mos old .,, took to vet and had dog tested only for dermadectic, was negative , got some medicine , went home did his research and started the raw meat diet only, not a drop of dog food,,,and vit c and eggs and some 7 grain bread for treats...and when he brought Kaiser back for me to sell for him at one year old he shined like new money and teeth clean and white and no ear no hot spots ....muscled out and beautiful and lives in Caddo Mills Texas now on a ranch the best dog the man every owned.....still on raw meat but he adds Bil Jac because hes very busyman , also bought three other pups from me ,,all raw meat diet with Bil Jac.....dry food .....
Itching is one of the results of the chemicals and crap in out commercial dog foods.....I have put up with itching and shedding for years till I got wise and added raw meat and when I run out or dont add it for a while you can sure tell it real fast.....I bought wal mart out today liver heart chicken necks and backs
We have a rescue mix that has allergies....I now have him on Innova food and a suppliment-no more itchies..
That good food, as we have a training group here in area that sells it, but I have 15 - 18 gsd's to feed and 4 cocker spaniels ,,,,,I tried it on my ofa excel girl for about 6 mos and she didnt eat it well and turn her nose up at it ....went for three weeks just looking at me Im a hard person to put over on and she almost starved and I had to give in an quit using it...It was quit costly...and I think too rich for her....she ate grass instead after each bowl and threw it up for days ,,,,never ever hadthat problem with her, she a pig when it comes to food......raw or kibble...so I dont know but 40.00 for a bag to throw up got my goat.........heard good reports other than that....
Hi Yellowrose. Since you seem to be very knowledgable about allergies, perhaps you can tell me how to determine if a dog or pup is truely alergic, if one does not do the test? I've seen two dogs who had continuous allergies and stomach problems eatting foods of all kinds: dry, raw, hypogenic, etc. One of those dogs will just always have problems. I feel that the breeder should offer some small refund at least, as the dog is just simply more time consuming and expensive than an ordinary dog. The other one did not really have an allergy, he had a problem of being misdiagnosed and wrongly medicated until he nearly died of it. Today, he's a healthy and happy dog. His owners had to give up on him and decide to let him die, quit his medication and quit feeding him special foods...he got a lot better and is a totally different dog. I thought the breeder owed those people a complete refund back when he was so very sick, and I was 100% wrong!
I offer a partial refund for a dog from my breeding program who is cronically sick with allergies, but since you say the test is so expensive and doesn't really prove that allergies are the dog's problem, I wonder if there is a deciding factor that can be used to determine if allergies are the problem? I haven't had any allergy problems with my dogs...yet. Knock on wood. I would hate to be like breeder #2, give a full refund on a dog who doesn't really have a genetic problem.
Looking forward to what you have to say, Ms. President Rose :-) And anyone else can chime in here too, just looking for some answers here.
Veronica
I guess if I faced that delimma , there is a batch of tests that can help start the search, but as my vet, who sends anyone with major complaints to a specialist dealing in allergies for dogs, because its a whole different part of veterinirian know how, it has to be done by the best , and that why the test run up to $2,000.00 .. After the batch tell you , the dogs is allergic to 25 things, where do you start...I once was partially paralized back 20 years ago, after a hysterectomy,.,,I was started on Premarin and only a portion ,,,,after three months my joints were frozen, hurt like knives cutting me , and I swole up all over,....had to wear only a long tee shirt and spent three months back and forth to hospital in Galveston wondering what in the worldas wrong with me as Ive never been sick a day in my life except a cold in the winter....no allergies and I love all foods and eat almost every thing except squid and raw fish.....and anchioves....they came back at me with a list a mile long and said to start the next day with each one and remove it from my diet till we found the culprit...hahaha., it was the very thing that didnt show up the Premarin and I figured that out on my own I halved it, then I fourth it and then cut it out all together....8 months later I was walking and with the help of a swimming pool got back most of my muscle tone...and went on later to do Schutzhund, but it did leave weak joint and the tendency to have lots of muscle soreness that takes days to get over...and I eat all veggies , and good foods all the time and it Ice cream time , my friend, with strawberries.....I never took any replacement from that day on, just vit E and Magnesium and Vit d and calcium Vit E helped me get thru without the sweats everyone else talked about....so when I start the dogs, I heard lots of tales about allergy tests and every time a dog had a hot spot or had diaharhea, or skin problems, friends would end up with thousand of dollars of test and vet bills.....I would discuss all this with them and to my surprise , all of them were being fed Science DIet , suggested by their vet, and I had already gone thru the Gal Co. Rabies Detention center problem with Science Diet dog food....the head lady had a cocker of mine and a german shepherd and a Rotty and some rep talked them into using Science Diet and all the dogs at the center and hers all got sick and hair fell out , skins got bad, dogs were horrible all over....I said three little words, "Its the Dogfood" and out the door it went.....some blamed the chemicals used,, some thought a disease ran thru, some didnt think., but she went back to what ever, which at that time they were using a Purina Rawlston food, which Rawlston no longer exists....If there is a really sick dog and its a bad case, its probably not an allergy , but a liver, or kidney and those batches need run first and then if theywant to run allergy test thats what they should do...for me and my house .....not needed.......People have to make those decisions based on the illness of the dog.....Read Kevin Trudeaus books first and second one ....get them at WALLY WORLD.....DOGS ARE JUST LIKE HUMANS....GOD MADE THE BODY TO WORK THE SAME JUST A DIFFERENT PH......
