Looking for input:

Have a friend that wants his 8-9 month old GSD tattooed. My question is will the ear fall at that age? What concerns are there to watch for tattooing a dog that age??

Thanks for all input

We had one done at 15 months with no problem.  He was knocked out for it......  That's my only experience with doing an "older" dog.

I recommend a thigh tattoo for an older dog.  Permanent and pain-free.  Or a microchip.

Keep in mind the tattoo method that will be used will be the German Hauptner tattoo in the right ear that punches the little holes, with the hauptner tattoo cream. (not the tattoo gun tattoo artists use)

I had my dog done when I did her OFA's and it was fine except the tattoo is very tiny.. when pups are done at 7 weeks, it  fills the area on the ear and grows along with it.. 7 month olds ears are probably about their real size, but may grow slightly..

Had no problems with it or the one that was done at 9 months with a pen....  Might be easier to do the thigh ...

I did ALL MINE AT 24 MONTHS AND A FEW PRELIMS AT 14 AND DONE WITH THE hAUPTNER KIND SO ALL WAS WELL .....I've never done a small pups tatoo    I dont care for chips...too many vets dont even have the guns to read or only have one kind....cant see a chip if by some chance someone takes the stolen dog out somewhere ....they dont come home alone, someone has to scan the dog and most lost dogs dont end up at a vets office.....on purppose.......

I tattooed a male at over a year, he whined a bit for a moment and that was it. It was a piece of cake and didnt harm his ear one bit.

We tattoo young and older dogs for people all the time!

We have never had any problems with the ears.

I have been to dog events where the judge must check the tattoo...and the dog has it on the stomach or thigh...the dog is "rolled" over on his side, legs pulled apart and 2 to 3 people hovering over the dog to check the tattoo....not the greatest of situations sometimes.

But alot of people insist on the thigh or stomach.....whatever is best for them

The tattoo is more like an "ear piercing" than a "tattoo experience",....most dogs whine or cry for a minute...but then it's over....no big deel.

Wow, I just keep talking to you Ms. Rose.  :-)

SchUSA promotes a microchip reader for only about $225 that reads every microchip out there under the sun...or rather, under any dogs' skin. :-)

Previously, such a reader cost $1000.

guess that is why most vets only have the old one ...some bigger cllinic have all of them....but there are thousands or how many vet offices in USA....I laugh when someone ask me , has anyone ever known of an ear being cut off  to get rid of the tatoo..???? I heard tell of it in Europe but never known of here...but wouldnt surprise me....so I wonder if they all know where to get the $225 one?
