I recently had a litter of 5 pups, all of which have a little pink on their noses, I have never experienced this before and I'm concerned.  Not only did i spend a LOT of money planning and breeding this litter, I dont want people who have deposits on these pups and plan on showing them to be concerned.  The toenails are black, the pigment is dark, only the noses have pink.  Any idea?

if they are newborn pink on the noses and pads of the feet is normal - it will darken within a few days to a week to dark grey, and then to black.

I have had puppies which took longer, 3 or 4 months but it goes away.

I cannot say that I have ever seen pink (I am colourblind anyway) but I have noticed a few born with lighter noses and they became jet black very soon. I would not be alarmed unless several months have passed and the pink is still there.

I have had showline litters born with pink noses and pads. generally blk/tans and reds.

most noses and pads turned black within a week or two of birth.

The noses generally darken completely, but take this as a warning. You can see slightly lighter parts on the pads and nails if they exist. These all taken together can help to give an idea of the strength of pigment and color in the animal. These days it seems that many have compromised on pigment since it is secondary to such concerns as health, working ability, structure, etc. The result is that we must compensate for the compromises of previous generations. If your bitch has signs of pigment weakness such as white nails, pink pads, receding saddle, etc., it is more important to seek a deeply pigmented stud. Best Wishes, Jonah
