The pup has already  been seen by the vet , but I would like to know if some of you breeders out there have their own home remedy for it. Thanks!

Ivemec and Lyme dip and lots of vit c and fish oil, preferrably wild salmon oil, keep cool, clean and I would await anyones holistic recipes...I have a customer that claims she has one but she would never email it to me   , guess she doesnt want me to know it.........and the best dog food and raw meat by the bucket load.....as little kibble as possible, with a whole brown egg a day, added to food   do all this gradually to the diet till the dog gets use to it.........

Flowers of Sulfur, or Sulfur Sublimed Powder manufactured by Humco, available at pharmacies, less than $3.   I once used this on a stray dog with obvious mange, and cured him.   It WORKS! Also, my mom has used the Nustock for hotspots, and says it works.  We found it at a feed store.

The whole problem with Demodex is the dog has a poor immune system.  All dogs carry the mites, but dogs with a good immune system keep them to a minimum and under control.  When a dogs immune system suffers, the mites can take over and become a problem.  Dips and chemicals may work to kill the mites BUT the also kill the immune system (the actual problem!) even more!  So they will make "what you see" go away, the symptoms, but only make the REAL problem worse.

We had a dog here with demodex once... we put her on a good all natural raw diet, gave her vit C and other immune boosting herbs, and it easily cleard up on her own!  I would not use the dips/chemicals for this.  I also would not give any chemicals on the dog - meaning no frontline or other flea preventative like that, no vaccinations, etc...

There is info out there on the net about treating it naturally if you look it up on a search.

Good luck!

Thanks everybody for the great ideas. Should I still continue the vet treatment or will natural treatments be enough? I would like to keep it natural.

May I suggest fresh lemon juice applied with a cotton swab? It dries the areas and provides certain nutrients that the skin needs during this time.

I would do the natural because Val is right as I stated in my prior thread  vit c and raw meat diet...plenty of it and shampoo with  (don't laugth)  Head n shoulders..shampoo and then do what Bob-o suggested  lemons in your tea provide y antitoxidents also....mint also  in the tea not on the dog,,,,cook potatoes and carrots slightly in chicken brothe with cabbage ,,doggie soup and feed daily....Much better and also the salmon oil, just a tiny bit and olive oil , extra virgin and then give him yogurt three or fourtimes a week to put good bacteria into his system......all german lines tend to get stressed at puppy time to graduate to a teenager and if a weaker one has a limited immune this mite goes to work......I also use garllic powder on food each day, just a dusting over top and mix ....much better thatn all the killer chemicals in commercial dog foods.......a pet tab at this time indogs life wouldnt hurt or better than that  Red Cell for Dogs is great......use as directed....do all of this little bit at a time as to not upset system , introduce a little bit at a time    Note: using the chemicals will sometimes make a male pup end up with no sperm count.....cant think of what uy call it  my brain is on pause....better stop now....sterile?

We have an Australian shepherd pup who was developing a case of red mange. We tried the ointment from the vet with some positive results in small areas of face but it wasn't possible to doctor the whole outside of the pup.  Aussies can't tolerate Ivermectin so that wasn't an option. We bought a 30 day supply of Interceptor which is a non-ivermectin heart worm medication. We will continue to give this to see the results.

HOWEVER

My husband searched on line because seeing his puppy's misery was breaking his heart. He found an old fashioned treatment...very easy, non toxic and seems to be working wonders.

1.    1 part 1% peroxide

(bottled peroxide is generally 3% so in order to get it to 1% we cut in half with water-say half cup peroxide with half cup water and then add the cup of water. This should yield 1.5% peroxide and since the dog will be wet it will be further diluted)

2.    1 part water

3.    as much borax (Old fashioned laundry detergent 20 mule power Borax available in grocery stores and Wal-marts) as will dissolve in the solution.

wash dog so coat is wet

rinse with the solution- as you would a flea dip

don't dry dog..allow solution to dry on coat

The theory is this-the peroxide helps to open the pores and hair follicles to allow the borax in and then the borax kills off the demodex mites.

We have only been using this for 24 hours and have seen a HUGE improvement in our pup. We bathed his full body yesterday am and then sponged the bad spots on his head last night. He slept through the night without crying for the first time in over a week. This morning he is bright eyed, playful and full of energy. We will sponge the sores on his head again tonight and give him another full body wash tomorrow to prevent it from spreading to other parts of his body.

Good luck to all
