All charges against the deputy in all the above captioned links (Christopher M Long) have been recinded. The Grand Jury foreman eroneously checked the wrong box on the form. Here is a link to a follow up story: http://www.newsobserver.com/1419/story/520661.html
The name of the officer who shot Max is reported as "C. Long", which I am thinking is a very common name. I doubt they are the same person.
I don't know about police procedures, but I would think that since Christopher Long was charged with the 2nd degree murder of an 18 year old kid he would have been assigned desk duty until this matter was cleared. Christopher Long was fired.

In our department it is standard procedure to place an officer involved in a shooting on administrative leave pending an investigation by a different agency that would be non-biased. Every agency handles things differently. Just from the little amount of info in the news article, the officer was being represented by someone from their police union and if he was fired without the Union raising nine kinds of hell then he was guilty of some sort of wrongdoing.
I clicked on the link that lead to someone's blog page and can only shake my head in disgust that the person doing the blogging is shaking his finger in self righteous indigniant agitation over those "paramilitary style deputies". Unfortunately for the men and women who wear the badge, they deal with narrow minded bigots such as this person daily. I'm not saying that the officer was right or wrong...but it's mighty suspicious that someone with his training, experience and leadership qualities would spook over the door ram. But...think of a football game....the players on lined up waiting for the hike, the anticipation has the players on an adrenaline high and just before the ball is hiked someone jumps the gun and gets called for a false start. The player didn't mean for it to happen......it just did......
As for the reason for a tactical entrance being used....a lot was left out of the article. Did this guy have a previous record? Is he involved in gang activity? Does he run with a group of people known to pack heat? All of these things are taken into consideration plus more when a decision is made to do a tactical entry. As for the moronic suggestion of taking him into custody in the front yard while he is is working on a boat or something.......the obvious reason for not doing this is because of the possible danger to neighbors, persons on the street and bystanders.

The deputy who shot the 18 year old is also named Christopher Long. He was fired from that department shortly after he killed the 18 year old man. The eerie thing is that this guy shot the 18 year old man's German Shepherd dog also. He reportedly also repeatedly shot a couple of unarmed motorists in a routine traffic stop a few years prior to this shooting.
He was fired shortly after he killed the 18 year old man. He was subsequently cleared by Grand Jury. It is not uncommon for individuals to apply for and obtain new positions with other police agencies under such conditions.

The teen that was shot and killed... Also had his German Shepherd shot and killed with him during the same warrant.
Scarry coinsidences...
If this is the same guy, go figure why things got so hush hush, and I guess we found dog #3 hh???
That's some good "digging" Scappy !!! Thank You for the links.
funny thing, I've dug even deeper finding nothing regarding the Greensboro teens who were shot in the car as they "tried to run over deputy long" (funny the bullets entered the side of the car) Anyway this story seems burried so for anyone with a super search engine here are the details I did find.
2 Teens, 17 Yr. old Gregory Donnell Miller and 18 Yr. old Terry Lamar Green
On February 8th of 2001 were both shot by Deputy Christopher Long in Greensboro, NC. on the 1600 block of Queen St.
That's all I have if anyone can get a full story on this I would love to read it !!!!

No one has yet mentioned the case of the poor pitbaull terrier, Precious, who peed and ran away when she saw the cops break in, but they shot her dead anyway. Not far from my house.
