I have a five month old Jack Russell Terrior puppy.  She got hit by a car yesterday.  With it being the holiday there is not a vet open in my area.  It doesn't seem that anything is broken.  She can walk, but is pretty banged up.  I have given her baby aspirin twice since it happened.  I just read that aspirin may not be good for puppies but it did not explain any further on why.  Can anyone give me more information on this?  I don't want to make the situation worse but I do want to give her some comfort until I get her to the vet tomorrow.  Thank you for any input.

A baby aspirin *should* be fine for your pup, assuming she doesn't have any internal bleeding or major trauma to any major organs. did you check the color of her gums, to make sure they are still pink. If they are not pink, more white, then she could be in shock or have intenal bleeding. Also, if you press on her gum, it should turn a whitish color, when you remove your finger, it should return to a pink color. This is called the CRT, (capillary refill time). It should only take abot 1-2 seconds for the color to return to pink. If it takes longer, she could be bleeding internally or in shock.

Basically she should really go to the vet. There are a lot of things  that couuld be wrong that you can't see.

Good Luck!

Surely you must have an emergency clinic somewhere??!!! Like sheesh said, your pup could have internal injuries... you should be at the ER now!! If this were a child would you hesitate to have it seen by a doctor or would you just give it an aspirin??  I don't mean to sound harsh, but this is very basic ........

If your dog has internal bleeding, which is possible, the LAST thing, the VERY LAST THING you want to give is aspirin, because it increases blood clotting time!

Here is a page with info on determining the correct dosage: http://www.always-healthy-people-and-pets.com/aspirin-dosage-for-dogs.html

I'm glad when I can use my nursing knowledge to help our four-legged friends too!

A useful tip re. aspirin for humans: if any of you are suffering a heart attack or stroke, doctors recommend you take an aspirin while waiting for the ambulance, as it will help prevent the blood clot causing the blockage from getting bigger.

And you DID call an ambulance, I hope? Or do you want your loved one doing the driving to have to perform CPR on the side of the road?

Did you call  your vet?? Even though it's a holiday weekend al vets have an answering service and will get ahold of them for emergencies.  Hit by a car is an emergency and your pup should be seen by a vet immediately!

Not all areas have emergency vets, not all vets have answering service.  jo lynn is trying to do what she can.  Some good advise for checking for internal bleeding, gums pink and refill time fast. Keep her as quiet as possilbe and be at your vets first thing in the morning before opening as they usualy get there early to set up for opening.  You may even leave a note on the office door today in case they have animals in office and someobdy coming in to care for them over the weekend.

I have never heard of a vet who didn't do on call if there was no ER to service their area ...... at least in the US.... jo lynn where are u?

I live in a very small town.  The biggest town around us is still considered country to most who live in a city.  I did call my vet and several others to see if I could get her somewhere to be seen.  The only thing the answering MACHINE said was the hours of the vets office.  I am not an animal hater.  It has killed my that this has happened.  If it were not important to me, I surely would not have taken the time nor interest to go somewhere for advice.  Thank you "animules" for realizing that just because we live in the U.S. not every city has a 24 hour vet or a animal hospital.

Thank you again to those of you who have given me some helpful advice and not just judged to whether I really cared about my puppy or not.
