Drontal is a wormer containing praziquantel, used to treat tapeworm. It's very expensive, about 5 USD per tablet, and the dosage for a GSD is 3 tablets. Another product, Drontal Plus, contains two other compounds and is a broader spectrum wormer. This one runs about 13 USD per tablet with a 3-tablet dosage for GSDs. Both Drontal formulations require a prescription.

There is a product called Trade Winds Tapeworm Tabs which contains praziquantel and which appears to be a generic form of Drontal. It does not require a prescription. Because the amount of praziquantel per tablet is less than in the name-brand product the dosage for a GSD is 5 tablets at a cost of 18 USD total, considerably less costly. Two of our three dogs routinely hunt and eat rabbits, mice, voles, groundhogs and etc. We live on a farm and there's no avoiding the exposure and ultimate infection with t. pisiformis.

My questions:

1. Have you used the Trade Winds preparation successfully?

2. Have you purchased Drontal or Drontal Plus from one of the Canadian online sites? If so, were you satisfied that the product you received is the actual Bayer formulation?

Given the recent issues with forged flea and tick products I'm hesitant to buy medication online and would be very interested in your opinions and experience.

Thanks!

Aqua,  There are several products on the market that contain Praziquantel that you can purchase at any feed store,  You just have to know where in the feed store to look and then properly dose it down with help from your vet,  these products usually contain some ivermec as well make sure you get one with a very low or no ivermec content,(there is one I know of that contains no ivermec)  and make sure your doseing down correctly the results could be cattastrophic if you don't.  Anyway where to find these products... Look in the Horse Care section.  Good Luck and be sure to consult your vet for proper dosages,  also keep in mind some Vets will not want you to use these products as they are not "approved" for dogs, some are some are not,  Anyway they would rather have you purchase Drontal from them.  But if you have a good repor with your vet and your vet is well versed there should be no problems with them helping you aquire the proper dosages.  PS you could worm about 20 dogs for the price of 15.00 dollars or so.  that's dependant upon which product you choose,  some of them are more dosages some of them are less dosages,  You must choose one then consult with your vet for the right dosage or you absolutely could KILL your dog !!!!

Notice that I have not reccomended any single product NOR WILL I DO SO.   It would be highly irresponsible for me to do that,  Just do your own homework,  Consult your own vet,  But I do understand your frustration with the cost of Drontal and can sympathize.

I'm confused by your breakdown on the cost.  You say that Drontal dosage is 3 tabs x $5 for a total of $15 per dog, and the Tradewinds dosage is 5 tabs for $18.  How do you figure $18 is cheaper that $15, (unless you're figuring in the cost of the vet visit)?

Me, too. Confused, that is.

The dosage for the Drontal (Droncit) is 5 tablets, not 3 as I had written. This is the 34 mg product and 5 tabs is the max dose. So one treatment would cost $25, not $15. My error.

Echo, I know about the equine products. The thing is, the dogs are on ivermectin for HW prevention and I do not want to add any more of that. But I'll check the feed store for the wormer without ivermectin, thanks for the pointer.
